Arsenal reset and push for Alvarez and Guimaraes

Julian Alvarez has become the headline name on Mikel Arteta’s attacking shortlist. After missing out not only on Vinicius but also on Morgan Rogers, Arsenal have circled back to the Argentina forward, with reports suggesting personal terms are already in place.

The situation is complicated. Alvarez is said to favour a move to Barcelona, yet he has not closed the door on a Premier League return. For Arsenal, that tension is the opening. A deal for Alvarez would also cast doubt over the long-term future of Viktor Gyokeres as a target, with the Gunners unlikely to stack expensive centre-forward options.

Arteta’s search for attacking reinforcements does not end there. Bradley Barcola and Iliman Ndiaye are both on the radar. Barcola is an especially attractive option, but the numbers are brutal: PSG want around £130m, far beyond Arsenal’s current valuation. Liverpool are already further down the line in talks, turning this into a straight fight with a financial edge.

While the forward line is being reimagined, the midfield coup is all but sealed. Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal has become the saga of the summer, but Newcastle have now effectively confirmed the Brazil international’s departure, with only the formal announcement missing.

The fee is understood to be around £75m, potentially rising to £80m. That figure makes Guimaraes the third arrival at the Emirates after Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis, and instantly reshapes Arsenal’s midfield. Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson has already hinted that Arsenal tried to push the price down. They failed. Arsenal are paying the going rate for a player they believe can anchor a title challenge.

At the back, the club’s ambitions have already hit resistance. An approach for Tottenham captain Cristian Romero went nowhere, and attention has turned to Ezri Konsa as a defensive option. Arsenal are recalibrating, but they are not retreating.

Liverpool go bold with Araujo and chase Barcola

Liverpool, facing a defensive injury crisis, have turned to one of Barcelona’s most important players. Ronald Araujo is on the brink of a season-long loan to Anfield, with widespread reports of an agreement between the clubs and Fabrizio Romano stating that a verbal deal is in place, approved by Deco.

The move is significant in more than one way. Araujo is not a fringe option at Barcelona; he is their captain. For Liverpool to secure him, even on loan, underlines both their need and their intent. The deal is expected to include an option to buy next summer if the 27-year-old impresses, giving the Reds a potential long-term pillar in defence.

Jürgen Klopp’s departure has not dulled Liverpool’s ambition in the market. The club are also pushing ahead for PSG winger Bradley Barcola. Talks have taken place, but there is a sizeable gap in valuation, with PSG demanding a substantial fee for the France international. Arsenal are watching closely and could try to hijack the move, yet Liverpool remain keen on the 23-year-old as they look to inject fresh pace and creativity into their attack.

Manchester City brace for Rodri exit and target Enzo Fernandez

Over at Manchester City, a different kind of anxiety is building. Barcelona have already had a £38.6m bid rejected for Rodri, with City holding out for a figure closer to £68.5m. For now, the Premier League champions see Barcelona’s offer as too low to even start serious club-to-club negotiations.

But Barcelona are expected to return with a second bid. And City are acting as if that might land.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that City are working on two midfield signings to follow the arrival of Elliot Anderson. Enzo Fernandez has emerged as a priority target, with manager Enzo Maresca keen on a reunion with his former vice-captain. The deal will be difficult, but the intent is clear: if Rodri goes, City want a ready-made organiser in the middle of the pitch.
