Arsenal's Summer Plan Centers on Bruno Guimarães
Arsenal’s summer is starting to take shape, and at the heart of it sits Bruno Guimarães.
Reports in France this week claimed an agreement in principle with Newcastle United for the Brazilian midfielder. Those claims have not yet been fully backed up, but the noise around the deal is growing louder. The Athletic now describes Arsenal as “closing in” on Guimarães, with the move viewed inside the club as one of three key additions still to be made.
The message is clear: Arsenal are not done yet.
Midfield anchor at the centre of the rebuild
Arsenal have already been busy. Illan Meslier has arrived from Leeds United to bolster the goalkeeping department. Christos Tzolis has come in from Club Brugge to add depth and directness out wide. Piero Hincapié’s stay has been made permanent after his loan.
That is the foundation. The next phase is about refinement at the top end of the squad.
One of those remaining targets is a central midfielder. If negotiations hold, that role is expected to be filled by Guimarães. Arsenal have tracked him for some time, seeing his blend of aggression, control and vertical passing as a natural fit for a side that wants to dominate games with and without the ball.
The pressure around the deal is rising. Guimarães is due to rejoin Newcastle for pre-season this weekend, and Arsenal would prefer to avoid a long, public saga once he is back in Eddie Howe’s old dressing room. They want this done quickly, cleanly, decisively.
Newcastle sources continue to push back on the idea that a sale is agreed or inevitable. Yet even on Tyneside, there is an acceptance that Howe’s recent departure was tied, at least in part, to the expectation that Guimarães could be sacrificed to balance the books and reshape the squad. Denials remain, but the context is hard to ignore.
For Arsenal, that crack in the door is enough. They are trying to push it open.
Vinícius pursuit and a hole in defence
Guimarães is only one piece of a broader puzzle.
A winger is also on the list, and here the ambition is clear: Arsenal are going after Vinícius Júnior. The Real Madrid star is locked in contract talks at the Bernabéu, and Arsenal are effectively on standby, waiting to see whether there is any opening at all. This is the kind of pursuit that depends less on negotiation skill and more on whether Madrid’s relationship with their player shifts.
If he extends as expected, Arsenal will have to look elsewhere. If not, the market changes overnight.
The third priority is at centre-back. William Saliba’s injury has left a hole that cannot be covered by wishful thinking alone. Arsenal want a defender capable of stepping in during his absence and maintaining the high line and composure that underpin Mikel Arteta’s system.
Names have circulated. Ezri Konsa. John Stones. Jacobo Ramon. For now, all three are considered out of reach or off the table. The early optimism around a quick defensive deal has cooled. There is no obvious frontrunner, no clear path, just a requirement that will not go away.
Which is why, at this stage of the window, Guimarães stands out as the most realistic move. The one with genuine traction.
A deal that could define the window
Nothing is signed. No shirts are printed. But the direction of travel is hard to miss.
Arsenal have mapped out their summer: Meslier, Tzolis, Hincapié locked in; a top-level midfielder, an elite winger, and a reliable centre-back still to come. Guimarães is the pivot point of that plan, the player who could tilt their midfield towards the level required to sustain a title challenge across a long, punishing season.
Newcastle will fight to keep him for as long as they can. Arsenal will try to move before pre-season rhythms make everything more complicated.
Some transfers simply fill gaps. This one, if it happens, would reshape the middle of Arsenal’s team.
