Arsenal Signs Misa Rodriguez: A Major Boost for Women's Super League
Arsenal have added serious weight to their last line of defence, signing Spain goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez on a free transfer in what is already a statement summer in north London.
The 27-year-old arrives from Real Madrid, where she became a symbol of the club’s rapid rise in the women’s game. Across six seasons she played 215 times – more than any other player in the club’s short history – and was handed the captain’s armband last year. Now she swaps Madrid white for Arsenal red and the battle for the gloves at Meadow Park just became one of the fiercest in the Women’s Super League.
Rodriguez will wear the number 16 shirt and walks straight into a crowded, highly competitive goalkeeping department. Daphne van Domselaar and Anneke Borbe both endured injury-disrupted campaigns last season, and their stop-start rhythm left Arsenal exposed at key moments. Misa’s arrival changes the dynamic. This is no depth signing. This is a World Cup winner coming in to push – or take – the starting role.

She knows about history. Since her senior Spain debut in 2021, Rodriguez has collected 34 caps and was part of the squad that lifted the 2023 Women’s World Cup, starting three matches during that triumphant run. The national-team picture has shifted since, with Barcelona’s Cata Coll taking over the No 1 spot, but that only adds an edge to this transfer. Arsenal are getting a goalkeeper with something to prove again at the very highest level.
For head coach Renee Slegers, this is another piece in a summer rebuild that looks less like tinkering and more like an aggressive push to turn “nearly” into “finally”. Last season Arsenal finished second in the WSL and reached the semi-finals of the Women’s Champions League. Close, often convincing, but ultimately short of silverware.
The response has been emphatic. Georgia Stanway, Ona Batlle, Selina Cerci, Geraldine Reuteler and Lisa Baum have already walked through the door, each one adding bite, balance or brilliance to different areas of the pitch. Now comes Rodriguez, the sixth signing of a window that has shifted expectations.
There is a clear pattern. Experience, mentality, big-game know-how. Stanway and Batlle bring it from England and Spain. Rodriguez brings it from Madrid and a World Cup-winning dressing room. Arsenal are not just stocking up on talent; they are filling the squad with players who understand what it takes to cross the line.
Competition in goal will be ruthless. Van Domselaar, still highly rated despite last season’s setbacks, will not step aside quietly. Borbe, too, will see this as a challenge rather than a verdict. Training sessions will be sharp, unforgiving, and exactly what Slegers needs if Arsenal are to push past Chelsea and the rest in 2026-27.
Arsenal have spent the last few seasons building a side that looks ready to dominate. With Misa Rodriguez now guarding the route to goal, the question is no longer whether they have the depth. It is whether this group can turn a bold summer into a defining season.
