Arsenal Nears Signing of Bruno Guimaraes for Title Defence
Arsenal are on the brink of landing one of the centrepieces of their Premier League title defence, with a deal for Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes agreed earlier this week for a fee worth around £75million, potentially rising to £80m.
The move, long in the making, is now at the final straight. Guimaraes was expected to cut short Newcastle’s pre-season training camp in Spain, where he had only just arrived from Brazil on Monday after a post-World Cup break, to fly back to the UK and complete his medical.
A four-year contract is in place, running until the summer of 2030. The Brazilian has already spoken with new manager Mikel Arteta, who is treating the transfer as done only when it is officially done.
Arteta keeps his guard up
In Dublin on Wednesday night, after a 3-1 friendly defeat by Real Betis, Arteta refused to be drawn into the excitement.
“I'm not going to talk about any players who aren't Arsenal players,” he said when pressed on how big a boost Guimaraes would provide his squad.
The questions kept coming. So did the manager’s straight bat.
“Well, I can tell you at the moment that something happens and we can announce it. I will give you my straight answer,” he replied when asked again about the impact of signing a player of Guimaraes’ calibre.
The message was clear: until the ink is dry and the announcement made, Arsenal will not get ahead of themselves publicly. Behind the scenes, though, this is a statement move.
Fourth signing in a ruthless window
Guimaraes will become Arsenal’s fourth signing of a busy summer, as the champions quietly rebuild with a ruthless edge rather than a celebratory glow.
The club have already secured Greek winger Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge in a £34m deal, adding direct running and end product to the flanks. Goalkeeper Illan Meslier has arrived on a free after leaving Leeds, boosting competition in goal without denting the budget.
Arsenal also moved decisively to keep Piero Hincapie. The versatile Ecuador defender, who impressed on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, has seen his temporary stay converted into a permanent transfer for around £34.5m. Another piece locked in. Another area of the squad stabilised.
Guimaraes, though, is different. He is the kind of midfielder who can tilt the balance of a title race.
Eyes on Vinicius Jr – but Madrid push back
Ambition at the Emirates does not stop with Guimaraes. The reigning champions are prepared to test the waters for his Brazil team-mate Vinicius Jr, in what would be the most audacious transfer in the club’s history.
Vinicius has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Real Madrid, a situation that would usually set alarm bells ringing across Europe. Arsenal are ready if the door opens even a fraction.
For now, that door remains firmly guarded. Crunch talks between Madrid and the player’s representatives on Wednesday are understood to have gone well, with the LaLiga giants and head coach Jose Mourinho confident that the forward will sign a lucrative new deal to stay at the Bernabeu.
The message from Spain is one of calm, not crisis. Vinicius is wanted, valued and, as things stand, expected to remain in white.
Calafiori lays down the marker
Inside the Arsenal camp, the mood is different from the outside noise of speculation. This is not a club basking in last season’s success. It is one looking up, not back.
Defender Riccardo Calafiori, speaking after the defeat to Betis in Dublin, did not hide what he believes the champions now require.
“We are on that level now. We are on top,” the Italian said. “We want to win the league again and we want to be even better than last season if we can. We need these kind of players, I think.”
Guimaraes fits that description. So does Vinicius Jr. One is all but through the door, the other still locked behind Madrid’s negotiating table.
Arsenal have made their intentions clear with their chequebook. The question now is not whether they are serious about staying on top. It is how far they are willing to go to stay there.
