“Bruno Guimaraes has been a done deal for Arsenal since the weekend,” he said, explaining that he trusts the sources close to the negotiations. The key element, the £80m package, is said to be fully agreed between the clubs.
Arsenal had already seen a £70m offer rejected, but quickly returned with an improved proposal worth £80m. That, sources say, hit Newcastle’s valuation and unlocked the agreement.
Inside Newcastle, though, the mood is far from resigned acceptance. Andrade claims the club were “furious” that word of the agreement leaked, and responded by slowing the process – not to haggle over money, but to control the timing and manner of the announcement.
The deal, he insists, is “done, completely done. He is Arsenal’s new signing.”
Conflicting briefings, same destination
As the story has gathered pace, the noise around it has grown.
The Sun reports that Guimaraes has already arrived at Newcastle’s pre-season camp in Spain, where he intends to formalise his stance by handing in an official transfer request. That would underline, in writing, what his actions have already made clear: he wants Arsenal.
Luke Edwards of The Telegraph has suggested that formal club-to-club talks between Arsenal and Newcastle only began on Monday. That timeline has been firmly challenged.
Fabrizio Romano has pushed back on that version of events, stating that discussions between the two clubs have been ongoing “for some time” and that several conversations have already taken place, with the player’s agents helping to drive the talks.
The competing briefings underline the tension. Newcastle want to shape the narrative around a sale they never planned to make; Arsenal are quietly confident they have landed one of the Premier League’s most complete midfielders.
Arsenal’s confidence, Newcastle’s scramble
Romano has doubled down on his stance. He maintains that Arsenal have “total confidence” they will sign Guimaraes and that the deal is “very close”, with only the final steps and the now-customary “here we go” still to come.
Personal terms are not an issue. Guimaraes has had an agreement with Arsenal for weeks, according to Romano, and is simply waiting for the clubs to finish the paperwork.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have already pivoted towards the future. New head coach Matthias Jaissle is involved in conversations with the hierarchy about potential replacements, identifying targets who might fill the enormous void Guimaraes will leave in midfield.
It is a brutal reality for a club that only recently talked of challenging the established elite. Arsenal, by contrast, look set to add another statement signing to a squad built to challenge for the title.
