Arsenal's Second Bid for Bruno Guimaraes: Will Newcastle Hold Firm?

Arsenal are preparing to test Newcastle United’s resolve again over Bruno Guimaraes, with a new bid expected for the Brazilian midfielder, according to Ben Jacobs.

Mikel Arteta has made strengthening the heart of his midfield a priority this summer, and Guimaraes sits at the top of that list. Arsenal’s first move was only a verbal proposal, believed to be around half of Newcastle’s £100 million valuation. It was never going to move the dial on Tyneside. It did, however, signal intent.

Now comes the real offer.

A £100m problem for Arsenal

Newcastle have been clear: Guimaraes is not for sale. He is their captain, their standard-bearer, and tied down for at least two more years, with the club holding an option for a further season. There is no immediate financial pressure to sell, and the message from St James’ Park has been deliberately stubborn.

Yet the dynamic is not entirely one-sided. Guimaraes has communicated his desire to join Arsenal, a crucial twist in a saga that could drag deep into the window. The player wants the Emirates. Newcastle want £100m. Arsenal want value.

Somewhere in that triangle, a decision has to be made.

Arsenal are understood to have a clear internal valuation of Guimaraes and will not chase the deal at any price. The next bid will be higher and more serious, but still crafted to test Newcastle’s willingness to negotiate rather than simply meet the asking price.

If Newcastle refuse to even sit at the table, Arsenal are prepared to walk away.

Newcastle’s gamble

From Newcastle’s side, the stance is bold. Keeping Guimaraes maintains their competitive core and sends a message that they will not be bullied out of their best players. With time left on his contract and a club option on top, they can afford to be patient.

But a player who wants to leave can quickly become a dilemma. The club must weigh the value of one more season of their midfield leader against the opportunity to cash in at a peak price and reshape the squad.

They have “a decision to make in the coming weeks” – and that clock is ticking loudly in both camps.

Arsenal’s Plan B

Arsenal, for their part, are not pinning the entire window on Guimaraes. If the deal collapses, they will pivot quickly. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott is one of the alternatives on their radar, a younger, developing profile who would cost significantly less and fit the club’s long-term planning.

Sporting director Andrea Berta also has other midfield names on his shortlist, ensuring Arteta is not left short in a pivotal area of the pitch.

The club have already moved decisively in one department, reinforcing the back line with French goalkeeper Illan Meslier. Attention now turns fully to the middle of the park, where Arsenal believe one major addition could tilt the balance in their favour domestically and in Europe.

The question is simple, even if the negotiations won’t be: will Arsenal push high enough to break Newcastle’s resistance, or will Guimaraes become the marquee midfield signing that got away?
