Across 24 Champions League appearances against Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, he has produced nine goals and 12 assists. He scored against Arsenal too, in last season’s quarter-final first leg at the Bernabeu, even as Real Madrid slipped to a 2-1 defeat.
These are not padded numbers from group-stage strolls. They are contributions in high-pressure, high-stakes nights against the very teams Arsenal are trying to leapfrog in Europe’s hierarchy.
His record against City alone will not have gone unnoticed in north London. In 12 meetings with Guardiola’s former side, Vinicius has four goals and six assists. Those are the kind of margins that decide trophies, the kind of performances that tilt a title race or a one-off final.
Drop that profile of player into Arteta’s system and the picture changes. Suddenly, Arsenal’s already dangerous frontline gains a world-class dribbler who relishes big stages and English opposition. It is exactly the sort of signing that says: this club intends to live at the very top table.
A race against the calendar
The transfer window does not close until the start of September, but Arteta’s ideal world is not one where a marquee signing arrives on deadline day. He wants his squad settled. “Why not?” – Arteta’s transfer stance
Arteta spelled out that ambition back in February 2024, when he was asked about another global superstar, Kylian Mbappe, ahead of a clash with Burnley.
On whether he was involved in talks over Mbappe, he said: “I'm not. Maybe Edu and the owners are, but I'm not involved until the last stage.”
Then came the line that still frames Arsenal’s transfer vision. Asked if it was a case of “why not,” Arteta replied: “Exactly. Why not? If we want to be the best team, then you need to have the best players, that's for sure.”
He did not shy away from Arsenal’s pull, either. “The club that we are, I don't think that's ever been an issue. Everyone wants to play for Arsenal.
“At least with the players we've discussed, they've always had a smile on their face when you open the door to that discussion. That's because of our history and everything we've done in the past.”
And on those elite names: “When there is a player of that calibre, we always have to be in that conversation. But it looks in a different way, that's what I would say.”
Vinicius Jr is precisely that calibre. A Champions League match-winner, a forward in his prime, and a marketing and footballing heavyweight rolled into one.
