Arsenal's Pursuit of Julian Alvarez Grows Amid Barcelona Interest
Arsenal’s late push for Julian Alvarez is still alive – and growing louder – despite the Argentine’s heart being set on Barcelona.
The Premier League champions have tracked the Atletico Madrid forward all summer, with FourFourTwo reporting that Alvarez’s preference remains a move to La Liga and the Camp Nou rather than a return to England. Barcelona is the dream. Arsenal, for now, are the reality knocking hardest on the door.
Yet the story refuses to close.
Arsenal back in the frame
In Spain, the mood music has shifted. Reports suggest the deal is far from dead for the Gunners, with the likelihood of Alvarez heading to north London increasing as the window ticks towards its close.
Spanish outlet Sport claims that “Julian Alvarez’s future will be decided in the coming hours, and all signs point to England,” adding that Atletico Madrid are “pushing” the 26-year-old towards N5 over a rival bidder. The pressure is coming from Madrid, not London.
Alvarez himself has been clear this summer. “The best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream,” he said, with Real Madrid having reportedly seen a £129 million bid rejected by Atletico earlier in the window. Since then, Arsenal have stepped into the vacuum.
Mikel Arteta has already called Alvarez personally, underlining how serious Arsenal are about the move. Yet the line from Spain remains the same: the former Manchester City forward only truly wants Barcelona.
Atletico in London, cards on the table
Atletico sporting director Mateu Alemany is currently in London, officially to discuss a deal with Chelsea for striker Nicolas Jackson. That trip could prove decisive. Sport Witness reports that Alvarez may also be on the agenda during Alemany’s visit, with Arsenal ready to test Atletico’s resolve again.
Arsenal are tangled in several strands of this attacking market. Viktor Gyokeres has now been linked with Barcelona. Gabriel Jesus is also said to be on the Blaugrana shortlist. If those dominoes start to fall, Alvarez’s path could twist again.
Inside London Colney, though, Arteta is braced for every outcome. FourFourTwo understands he is prepared for the possibility of not signing another forward at all this summer, even with so many moving parts around him.
A crowded, restless forward line
Gabriel Martinelli has reportedly turned down an offer from Galatasaray, a decision that keeps one more option in Arteta’s attacking stable for now. There is also said to be interest from Arsenal in Victor Osimhen, another heavyweight name circling the conversation without yet landing.
Other pursuits have already collapsed. Arsenal are not involved in the race for Bradley Barcola. Moves for Vinicius Jr and Morgan Rogers have gone nowhere: Vinicius Jr extended his deal in Madrid, while Rogers chose Chelsea in a British record transfer.
So the focus swings back to Alvarez.
Sport Witness, relaying the Sport report from Spain, states that Arsenal’s proposal stands at “€80m plus Viktor Gyokeres,” with the Argentine able to “double his salary at the Emirates and have a key role under Mikel Arteta.” The offer is clear: money, minutes, and status.
On the pitch, the fit is obvious. Alvarez could replace Martinelli on the left, driving inside from the flank, or operate as a central option to compete with Kai Havertz. His role would hinge on who leaves London Colney in the coming weeks – and on whether Arsenal can finally drag him away from his Barcelona dream.
The clock is ticking. Atletico are pushing. Arsenal are waiting. Alvarez has a choice to make.
