Arsenal’s Last-Minute Bid for Lautaro Martinez After Missing Out on Julian Alvarez
In a frantic final effort to reinforce their attack, Arsenal turned their sights to Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez. After missing out on Julian Alvarez, who preferred a move to Barcelona, and failing to secure Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen, the Gunners sought a new striker option as the summer transfer window closed.
Gabriel Heinze Leads the Martinez Approach
The club's assistant manager, Gabriel Heinze, personally contacted Martinez during the last week of August, aiming to persuade the Argentine forward to join the Premier League side. Martinez, 29, who scored 22 goals in 41 appearances last season, was seen as the perfect fit to bolster Mikel Arteta's frontline following the exit of Gabriel Jesus and the inability to secure other key forwards.
Targets Dwindle as Alvarez and Osimhen Slip Away
Arsenal had initially targeted Atletico Madrid’s Alvarez but could not match his preference for Barcelona. The club also explored a deal for Osimhen, but complications prevented any late agreement. As a result, Martinez became the primary option.
Inter Milan Holds Firm on Martinez’s Future
Inter remains firm in their stance that Martinez is not for sale, with the striker still under contract for three more years. Despite the interest from England and contact initiated by Heinze, the Italian club considers him indispensable.
Martinez Commits to Staying in Milan
"No doubt I would like to retire at this club," Martinez said in May. "It’s hard for me to imagine myself anywhere else these days. You never know in football but if they don’t kick me out, I’m staying here."
He expressed his gratitude for the city and the club's support, mentioning his family and personal ties to Milan. "I have a restaurant, my kids go to school. I’ll always be here because I feel good, because I’m happy," he added. Martinez acknowledged the reality of football careers but affirmed his loyalty to Inter for now.
Arsenal Faces Attacking Challenges Ahead
With no major signing secured upfront, Arteta faces tough choices this season. Kai Havertz has started strongly but is often considered a hybrid attacker rather than a classic striker. Meanwhile, Viktor Gyokeres has yet to make an appearance in Arsenal’s first two Premier League matches, suggesting Arteta may still be searching for a reliable number nine to lead the line.
- Julian Alvarez: Preferred Barcelona over Arsenal
- Lautaro Martinez: 29 years old, 22 goals in 41 games last season
- Victor Osimhen: Deal complicated, no breakthrough
- Gabriel Jesus: Departed Arsenal before window
- Kai Havertz: Good start, hybrid forward role
- Viktor Gyokeres: No minutes played in first two PL games
