Arsenal’s flirtation with the idea of Vinicius Jr in red and white is over. The Brazilian has signed on at Real Madrid until 2032, and with that, one of the more ambitious subplots of the summer window has been shut down.

Arsenal and United circle £73m Esposito
Attention has turned to Inter Milan striker Pio Esposito, a 21-year-old centre-forward who has been tracked by both Arsenal and Manchester United.
According to reports, Arsenal sent scouts to watch Esposito in Inter’s pre-season derby against AC Milan, a fixture that offered a close-up view of the 6ft 3in forward against top-level opposition. Those inside the club believe he could complement a striking group that already includes Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz, giving Arteta a different profile at the top end of the pitch.
United are watching the same player. They admire Esposito, but are said to be in no rush to make a formal move, preferring to let the market develop. Arsenal, by contrast, look more urgent. With the season fast approaching and a title to defend, hesitation is a luxury they may feel they cannot afford.
Inter have tried to slam the door shut in public. The club have labelled Esposito “untouchable” as they attempt to fend off a growing list of admirers. Behind the scenes, though, there is a number. The Serie A side are understood to have set a private valuation of around £73 million, a figure designed to test just how serious the Premier League interest really is.
Those close to Esposito insist he remains committed to Inter, but the pull of England is real. The idea of the Premier League – its pace, its spotlight, its money – has his attention. He is open to a move if the right offer lands.
Villa brace for Konsa exit as Arsenal push
Arsenal’s gaze is not fixed solely on the top end of the pitch. At the other end, defensive reinforcements have become a priority.
Aston Villa are said to be increasingly resigned to losing Ezri Konsa, with Arsenal readying a fresh push for the 28-year-old centre-back. Arteta’s interest dates back to the aftermath of the World Cup, when William Saliba’s back injury exposed just how thin Arsenal were behind their first-choice pairing. The situation has not eased, with Ben White and Jurrien Timber now also dealing with fitness issues.
Konsa has emerged as a primary target. Arsenal’s opening offer, though, fell well short of Villa’s valuation, understood to be just over half of the Midlands club’s £60m asking price. That gap has not killed the move. If anything, it has heightened the tension.
Reports suggest Villa are growing “increasingly concerned” that Konsa will leave before the window shuts. Inside the dressing room, the mood is jittery. Team-mates fear he may be the next big departure after Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans, both of whom have already moved on this summer.
Liverpool lurk in the background. They are managing defensive problems of their own and could yet enter the race if the situation drags on. Virgil van Dijk is back after the World Cup, but Joe Gomez has picked up a pre-season injury, while Jeremy Jacquet has been missing from other friendly line-ups. New manager Andoni Iraola needs bodies quickly, and Konsa fits the profile of a ready-made Premier League defender.
So Arsenal find themselves in the thick of two battles: one with Manchester United for a £73m striker, another with Aston Villa – and potentially Liverpool – for a centre-back who has quietly become one of the most reliable defenders in the division.
