Arsenal's Summer Transfers Position Them as WSL Title Favorites for 2026-27

The summer transfer window saw Arsenal add key players like Georgia Stanway and Ona Batlle, boosting a squad already filled with talent. These signings have positioned the Gunners as strong contenders to claim their first domestic league title since 2019.

Despite not winning the WSL recently, Arsenal made headlines by winning the Women’s Champions League in May last year, defeating Barcelona in the final – a feat no other English women's team has achieved. Their route to that trophy also included a stunning comeback against eight-time winners Lyon in the semi-finals. Even though Lyon bested them in the following season’s semi-finals, Arsenal proved they can compete at the highest European level.

Building on Continental Success

This summer’s focus has been to address the depth issues that previously held the team back domestically. With Chelsea dominating six consecutive WSL seasons before Manchester City took the crown last season, Arsenal needed reinforcements to challenge for the top spot again.

Improved Squad Depth

Renee Slegers now commands a squad with notable depth across all positions, mixing seasoned pros with young talents who have senior-level experience. For example:

  • Olivia Smith: Three solid senior seasons, including managing expectations linked to her transfer fee in 2025-26.
  • Smilla Holmberg: Played at the 2025 European Championship, featuring in Sweden’s quarter-final match versus England.
  • Lisa Baum: A younger player but with senior football experience dating back to age 15.

There remains some concern at centre-back where injuries to Leah Williamson and Katie Reid could leave limited options, but otherwise the roster is impressively stocked.

Reducing Reliance on Key Players

In recent seasons, Arsenal depended heavily on players like Kim Little and Mariona Caldentey in midfield, with noticeable dips in performance when either was absent. Now, the arrivals of Stanway and Geraldine Reuteler offer fresh options to share the workload, especially with Little now aged 36.

Upfront, Alessia Russo has carried much of the scoring responsibility while managing to avoid injury. The additions of Selina Cerci, Stina Blackstenius, and Michelle Agyemang (currently recovering from an ACL injury) provide more opportunities to rest Russo during the long campaign.

Flexibility in Midfield Roles

Stanway’s versatility adds valuable tactical options. She can operate in several midfield roles, complementing players like Reuteler, Little, Caldentey, and Frida Maanum, who also shifts between attacking and deeper positions. This flexibility allows rotation and tailored lineups to exploit opponents' weaknesses or manage player fatigue.

High Quality Across the Squad

Arsenal’s recent European success demonstrated their capacity to win major trophies. Adding world-class players like full-back Ona Batlle, midfielder Stanway, and prolific scorer Cerci only strengthens their title credentials.

While defending champions Manchester City face the demands of both WSL and European fixtures, and Chelsea show signs of inconsistency following their six-title streak, Arsenal look well-equipped to capitalize. Manchester United had a quiet transfer window coupled with a coaching change, and ambitious newcomers London City Lionesses may need more time to challenge for the crown despite high-profile signings.

Arsenal possess a balanced, deep, and versatile squad with proven ability to perform on big stages. Their goal is clear: to end the seven-year wait and lift the WSL title once again.
