The pressure may not just be financial. The same report claims Guimaraes has informed Newcastle officials that he wants the move to the Emirates Stadium. If that position holds, it could accelerate talks and turn a hard “no” into a more nuanced conversation as the week unfolds.
From quiet window to full throttle
For weeks, Arsenal’s window looked subdued. Now it is anything but.
On Thursday, the club completed the £34 million signing of Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis, adding direct running and end product to Arteta’s attacking options. They also finalised a £34 million deal for defender Piero Hincapie, who impressed last season on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, and secured goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer to deepen competition between the posts.

At the back, Ezri Konsa has emerged as one of the leading candidates to reinforce a defence hit hard by injury. William Saliba faces several months out with a back problem, a blow that has forced Arsenal to rethink their depth at centre-back. Konsa, proven in the Premier League and entering his prime, fits the profile of a plug‑and‑play solution.
John Stones is another name on the table. With his Manchester City contract having expired at the end of last month, he represents a rare opportunity: an experienced, technically gifted defender available without a transfer fee, though his wages and fitness record would still demand careful consideration.
Further forward, the hunt continues. Arsenal remain keen on Julian Alvarez, whose work rate, movement and versatility would dovetail neatly with Arteta’s fluid front line.
