Arsenal’s Tactical Approach Pushes Ben White and Jurrien Timber to Their Limits
Arteta Faces Challenge Managing Arsenal's Right-Backs Amid Injuries
Mikel Arteta is dealing with a tricky defensive situation after Ben White picked up a groin injury during Arsenal’s win at Sunderland. Meanwhile, Jurrien Timber is still recovering from his own fitness setbacks, making it tough to keep both of Arsenal’s top right-backs in good shape.
Right-Back Concerns Grow After White's Injury
The issue became clear when White had to come off at half-time due to his groin problem, raising fresh questions about Arsenal’s options on the right flank. White had started the season well after overcoming a knee injury that ruled him out of the World Cup back in May. He had also managed to shake off a knock sustained against Napoli in the Champions League. But now, with this new injury at the Stadium of Light, Arsenal faces another fitness hurdle.
Timber stepped in for White during the Sunderland match, marking his first appearance this season after dealing with his own groin issue. With either defender sidelined, the other carries a heavy physical burden.
The Physical Toll on Modern Full-Backs
The role of full-back demands intense physical effort. Arteta expects his defenders to constantly make overlapping runs, sprint back to defend, and maintain high-speed movement throughout the game. Stephen Smith, an injury performance analyst from Kitman Labs, pointed out how this position requires repeated explosive sprints rather than just covering large distances.
"Full-back is certainly one of the most demanding positions on the field and the data backs it up," Smith said. "The honest picture is demand for a full-back isn’t about total mileage, it is about the type of running – repeated, explosive sprints up and down the same channel."
Managing Squad Depth and Recovery
Arsenal has plenty of options on the left side with players like Riccardo Calafiori, Piero Hincapie, and Myles Lewis-Skelly. But managing the workload on the right remains critical to their title hopes.
White missed the squad for the recent Carabao Cup win over Ipswich, where Martin Zubimendi was used at right-back. Timber was rested as well, though Arteta confirmed he did not suffer any new issues after last season’s ACL injury cut short his debut campaign.
Smith advised caution on returning too quickly: "Even a mild groin or adductor strain typically needs a week or two of managed loading before a player is even back to full training intensity."
International Break Offers Key Recovery Time
Arsenal’s next match is against White’s former club, Brighton & Hove Albion. White might be available, but the upcoming three-week international break is a perfect chance for both White and Timber to recover fully.
These weeks will allow Arsenal to carefully rebuild their fitness and prepare them to perform at peak levels again. With the title race demanding maximum physical output, smart rotation and load management could keep Arsenal’s defense solid and ensure their right-backs stay fresh when the league resumes.
