Anthony Joshua Names His Next Opponent If He Defeats Tyson Fury
Anthony Joshua has announced who he wants to face next if he comes out on top against Tyson Fury this December. The highly anticipated showdown between these two British heavyweights is set for December 11th at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, an event many consider the biggest fight in British boxing history.
This battle has been years in the making, with numerous attempts failing to bring it from negotiations to an actual ring meeting. Now, the fighters are finally locked in for what could also be a contest for the WBA's 'Super' heavyweight title. This might be the first time that belt is on the line between two fighters who currently do not hold it.
WBA Title Dispute Surrounding the Fight
The situation has stirred controversy, especially for Russian heavyweight Murat Gassiev. He holds the WBA 'Regular' heavyweight championship after Oleksandr Usyk gave up all his world titles in June. Gassiev defended his title successfully in July against Peter Kadiru.
Despite reports that the Fury vs Joshua bout will be for the 'Super' title, the WBA has not officially confirmed this. Gassiev’s camp has lodged a formal complaint demanding the WBA deny these claims and ensure Gassiev’s position as the sole world heavyweight champion remains intact.
John Wirt, Gassiev's co-promoter and legal advisor, stated, "If anyone should be fighting for the WBA Super heavyweight title, it is Murat Gassiev, the reigning champion, not two boxers who currently hold no world title between them."
Joshua's Commitment to Face Gassiev
At the press conference launching the Fury fight, Joshua was clear about his plans if he wins. When asked who he would face next, Joshua replied simply with two words: "Murat Gassiev."
The WBA rules require the 'Super' champion to defend their title against the 'Regular' champion. In modern boxing, it is common for fighters to vacate titles to avoid mandatory matches they prefer not to take. Joshua and Fury might have financial incentives to avoid facing Gassiev, who is less marketable and would likely bring smaller earnings compared to their fight with each other.
Still, Joshua appears ready to meet his obligations and face Gassiev should he defeat Fury, which will be welcomed news by Team Gassiev.
