Andy Roddick Comments on Andre Agassi’s Take on Alexander Zverev at the Laver Cup

Team Europe defeated Team World with a score of 13-5 at the 2026 Laver Cup. Alexander Zverev sealed the win for Europe by beating Learner Tien in straight sets.

Andre Agassi’s Remarks on Zverev

After the match, Team World captain Andre Agassi playfully roasted world number two Zverev. He said,

"Congratulations, Sascha, on a crazy year. Seeing you win [a Grand Slam] for the first time, I know how important that was to you, and it was important to me too, because I could start listening to your press conferences again. You weren’t like, ‘Waah, why do I always lose? Why am I the third best in the world? I suck.’ But then you win, and it’s like, I’m only a one-time Slam champion; I’ve got to do it again."

Andy Roddick’s Reaction to Agassi’s Comments

Former world number one Andy Roddick responded to Agassi’s remarks during his podcast Served with Andy Roddick. He noted Agassi’s skill at switching tones quickly, from teasing Zverev to delivering a heartfelt message to his team. Roddick said,

"Andre has an unbelievable ability to shift gears very, very quickly. He can go from kind of roasting Zverev to having a very heartfelt moment to his team. His team loves playing for him; by the way, there is no doubt about it."

Roddick added that Zverev usually takes criticism well. He shared,

"Say what you want about Sascha, and obviously there are a million different opinions. In my experience, if you go after him, he normally receives it well. I’ve criticized him and his game, and he’ll often go, ‘Yeah, that’s accurate.’"

Zverev’s Response and Upcoming Challenge

Zverev didn’t seem bothered by Agassi’s jokes, laughing with Team Europe. Roddick pointed out it’s easier to joke around when you’re winning so much. After the Laver Cup, Zverev will head to the China Open in Beijing as the top seed and favorite to win.

Projected Path to the China Open Title

  • 1st Round: vs Cameron Norrie
  • 2nd Round: vs Sebastian Baez or Juncheng Shang
  • Quarterfinals: vs [6] Novak Djokovic
  • Semi-finals: vs [3] Alex de Minaur
  • Final: vs [2] Felix Auger-Aliassime

Zverev faces increasing challenges as he advances, including a possible quarterfinal against Novak Djokovic, who is unbeaten in Beijing despite recent ranking drops. Later rounds may pit him against tough opponents like Daniil Medvedev, Jakub Mensik, Alex de Minaur, or Felix Auger-Aliassime. Though Zverev has reached three semi-finals at this event before, he has yet to win the China Open.

His campaign starts on Wednesday, September 30, on Centre Court against Norrie.
