Amara Nallo heads to HJK Helsinki with point to prove after turbulent Liverpool start

Liverpool defender Amara Nallo has agreed a loan move to HJK Helsinki for the rest of the calendar year, a pivotal step in a young career that has already lurched from promise to controversy in a matter of minutes.

The 19-year-old centre-back will slot straight into the Finnish champions’ run-in, eligible for the final six rounds of the Veikkausliiga regular season and the subsequent championship split, with the 12-team league dividing into two sections for the closing stages. The timing is ideal for HJK. For Nallo, it feels critical.

From academy prospect to record-breaking red cards

Signed from West Ham United in 2023, Nallo arrived at Liverpool as a highly regarded left-sided central defender and has spent the bulk of his Anfield time anchoring the under-21s. Strong in the air, comfortable on the ball, he looked set to follow the familiar pathway from Kirkby to Jürgen Klopp’s senior squad.

Then came Eindhoven.

Handed his senior debut in a Champions League dead rubber away to PSV in January 2025, Nallo’s big moment turned sour almost instantly. Sent on late from the bench, he lasted just four minutes before being shown a red card, becoming the youngest player ever dismissed in Liverpool’s history. One appearance, one dismissal, one unwanted record.

His second taste of first-team football barely went any better. Introduced again as a substitute in the League Cup defeat to Crystal Palace at Anfield last October, he saw red once more, this time after only 12 minutes on the pitch. Two senior games, two early baths, and a narrative threatening to harden around a teenager still learning his craft.

There has been at least one calmer chapter. Nallo’s third outing, at home to Qarabag in the Champions League in January, finally passed without drama as he safely navigated the final 16 minutes. He has also been trusted often enough to make the matchday squad on nine other occasions, most recently for the Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield in April, even if he never left the bench.

Fresh stage, clean slate

Now comes a different kind of test. With the Finnish season running from April to late October, HJK can offer something Liverpool cannot at this stage: the promise of regular senior football in a title race and in Europe.

Nallo has already been registered for HJK’s European campaign and named in the squad for their Europa Conference League second qualifying round first leg against Coleraine on Thursday night. He could debut on the continental stage for his new club before he has even kicked a ball in their domestic league.

For Liverpool, the move is logical. A defender whose early first-team minutes have been defined by red cards needs rhythm, responsibility and the chance to make mistakes away from the glare of Anfield. For HJK, it is an opportunity to plug a youthful, high-upside defender into a team accustomed to winning.

For Nallo, it is something simpler.

A chance to be known for more than the colour of the card in the referee’s hand.
