Alejandro Garnacho Faces Challenges at Aston Villa but Could Find Escape Route
The beginning of Alejandro Garnacho's time at Aston Villa has been disappointing. The Argentine winger joined on loan from Chelsea this summer, with a £43 million obligation to buy triggered by certain conditions described as 'easily achievable.' Yet, his impact so far has been minimal.
He has appeared just three times in the league, totaling only 31 minutes on the pitch, and has been benched for the past four matches across all competitions. This situation has sparked comparisons to Harvey Elliott, who signed a similar loan deal with Villa in 2025 but featured in only nine Premier League games because manager Unai Emery avoided activating a permanent transfer.
Emery's Comments on Garnacho's Role
Unai Emery hasn’t been as direct about Garnacho's future as he was with Elliott but has made clear where Garnacho stands in the team hierarchy. When asked about the winger's prospects, Emery urged persistence:
"Continue working. Work, work, train, work. When he can have minutes to play, try and play well. He is progressing, but we have players in front of him now."
He named George Hemmings, Alysson, and Ibrahim Mbaye as those ahead of Garnacho in selection, praising their performances and competitive spirit.
"George is playing fantastic. Alysson is also understanding things well and is giving us things I want. Mbaye also responded well. We want a competitive team and players to compete in the style we have. Garnacho is a little bit behind because of some circumstances we had in pre-season. It is time to be patient for the time he needs."
Potential Move Back to La Liga
If Garnacho's difficulties continue, a transfer could be on the horizon. Reports from the Daily Mail suggest several La Liga clubs are keeping tabs on him ahead of January’s transfer window. Such a move would offer Garnacho a chance to revive his season with more regular playing time and return closer to home. Born in Madrid, Garnacho spent time in Atlético Madrid's academy before joining Manchester United in 2020 at 16 years old.
During the international break, Aston Villa is holding a training camp in Seville, Spain, while many squad members are away on international duty. Garnacho, whose last appearance for Argentina was in 2024, will be present and might use this opportunity to impress Emery before Premier League action resumes on October 10.
