AFC Champions League Matchday One: How K League Teams Approached the Challenge
Daejeon Hana Citizen’s Motivated Start
Daejeon Hana Citizen began their first AFC Champions League appearance in 23 years with a 1-0 win over Kyoto Sanga at home. Manager Hwang Sun-hong fielded his strongest lineup, signaling the importance of the competition to the team. Although the first half showed some nerves and Kyoto Sanga played aggressively, Daejeon gained control in the second half. Despite a disallowed goal from Gustav Ludwigson, Victor Bobsin secured the winner with a spectacular shot from outside the box, marking his third goal in as many matches.
Defender Kang Yoon-seong spoke about the motivation the ACL brought to the team, emphasizing that qualifying again next year would require improvement in the league. He highlighted how the experience has boosted players’ confidence ahead of domestic matches.
"Playing in the ACLE for the first time, I really got a taste of it. It made me want to be in it again next year. We can’t qualify with our current league position, so we need to improve. The players are all clearly aware of this."
Manager Hwang noted the high tempo and pressing intensity from J.League teams as something Korean football must match to progress. He criticized his team's lack of precision in attack and called for better composure and detail in chance creation during controlled play.
"The speed and intensity of pressing by J.League teams are outstanding. If that cannot be overcome, Korean football and the K League cannot develop further. We need to manage the game more proactively."
