Ranking the Toughest Groups at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The groups for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been finalized after March’s playoffs confirmed all 48 participating teams. The tournament will be the largest in its nearly century-long history, following FIFA's expansion plans.

Initially, the plan was to have 16 groups of three teams, but the unpredictable outcomes during the last group stage matches at the 2022 World Cup led FIFA to maintain the traditional four-team group format. This decision paved the way for what many call the 'Group of Death' to appear once again on North American soil.

Which Group is the Toughest?

Group I stands out as the most difficult. Featuring France, Senegal, and Norway, this group promises intense clashes. The addition of the inter-continental playoff winner Iraq adds an element of unpredictability as they hope to cause upsets.

Group D comes close in difficulty with an average FIFA ranking just slightly behind Group I. The hosts, the United States, face a tricky lineup including Paraguay, Australia, and Türkiye, who secured their spot through a playoff victory.

Group F showcases the Netherlands as the main favorites, but Japan, Sweden, and Tunisia are eager to challenge the status quo and could disrupt expectations if the Dutch falter.

Another demanding pool is Group K, with an average ranking of 28.5. It includes Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, and Colombia as the primary contenders. Meanwhile, Argentina, powered by Lionel Messi, confronts tough rivals Algeria and Austria in Group J.

Easier Paths and Other Groups

Group B might be the least threatening. Despite the presence of playoff winners Bosnia and Herzegovina—who notably defeated Italy in their qualifying path—the group also includes Canada, Qatar, and Switzerland. Their average ranking is 42.25, the highest number indicating lower overall strength compared to other groups.

Groups E and H offer smoother roads for European giants. Germany and Spain are favored to claim the top spots comfortably, with these groups averaging a ranking of just 37.25.
