2026 World Cup Knockout Travel: Colombia and Canada Face Longest Journeys

Travel Demands in the 2026 World Cup Knockouts

The upcoming 2026 World Cup, spread across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, promises more travel than ever before due to its expanded roster of 48 teams. Although group stage matches were mostly clustered regionally to limit movement, the knockout rounds present a very different challenge with teams potentially facing long flights between games.

Knockout Round Travel Distances

Match locations for the knockout rounds are fixed, irrespective of which teams advance. This means some squads could encounter extensive travel if they keep winning.

The winner of the Colombia vs. Ghana match in Kansas City will have the longest trek in this round, traveling about 1,572 miles to Vancouver for their next game against either Switzerland or Algeria. Other notable journeys include the victor of Brazil vs. Japan heading 1,423 miles to New York, while the winner between Ivory Coast and Norway will fly roughly 1,385 miles from Dallas.

The most significant flight in the knockout stage belongs to the winner of Game No. 90 in the Round of 16. That team will travel 1,592 miles from Houston to Boston. Possible contenders for this trip include Canada, Morocco, and the Netherlands. Another long journey involves moving from Vancouver to Kansas City, covering 1,572 miles, potentially for Switzerland, Algeria, Colombia, or Ghana.

The final four teams will gather in Dallas and Atlanta. One semifinalist will face a 1,549-mile flight from Boston to Dallas, while another will make a shorter 594-mile trip from Miami to Atlanta. Additionally, a team coming from Los Angeles will cover 1,224 miles to Dallas. Teams such as Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands could be part of these matchups in Dallas.

The championship game at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey will bring together winners from Dallas and Atlanta. The team advancing from Dallas will endure a 1,385-mile journey eastward for the final showdown.

Group Stage Travel Recap

During the group stage, FIFA aimed to keep teams close geographically, but some squads still logged significant miles. Bosnia and Herzegovina traveled the furthest, covering 3,144 miles across venues in Toronto, Los Angeles, and Seattle. Other high-mileage teams included Algeria (2,972 miles), Czechia (2,811 miles), South Africa (2,440 miles), and DR Congo (2,270 miles).

Looking ahead, the travel demands could shape how teams handle rest and recovery during the knockout phase, possibly impacting their performance on the pitch.
