2026 World Cup Knockout Stage: Teams Qualified, Bracket, and Schedule Updates

The 2026 World Cup is underway, and the knockout stages are starting to take shape. Mexico and the United States, as co-hosts, were the first to secure their spots in the Round of 32. More teams will soon join them as group play wraps up. Each knockout match means everything: one loss sends a team home, while a win pushes them closer to the title.

Third-Place Teams and Qualification

The top eight third-place finishers across the 12 groups will advance to the knockout stage. These teams are ranked based on points earned, goal difference, and goals scored among other factors. The full list remains undecided as group matches conclude.

Spotlight on Qualified Teams

Mexico

After winning its first two matches, Mexico clinched first place in Group A, locking in a strong seed for the Round of 32. Their next opponent will be a third-place team from one of Groups C, E, F, H, or I.

United States

The USMNT topped Group D, marking their first time finishing first in the group stage since 2010. Their Round of 32 matchup is set for July 3 against a third-place finisher from Groups B, E, F, I, or J.

How the Knockout Bracket Functions

The Round of 32 kicks off the single-elimination portion of the tournament. No draws are allowed; matches tied after regulation go into 30 minutes of extra time. If still tied, penalty shootouts decide the winner.

First-place teams face runners-up or selected third-place qualifiers from specific groups according to a preset bracket.

Tiebreakers in Group Stage

If teams share the same points (3 for a win, 1 for a draw), standings are decided by:

  • Goal difference across all group matches
  • Total goals scored
  • Head-to-head points among tied teams
  • Head-to-head goal difference
  • Head-to-head goals scored
  • Team conduct score (fewer cards is better)
  • FIFA Men’s World Ranking

Later Rounds

Winners progress through Round of 16, quarterfinals, and semifinals, culminating in the final on July 19. A third-place match is scheduled for July 18.
