2026 World Cup Knockout Stage: Updated Bracket, Schedule, and Qualified Teams
With the 2026 World Cup underway, attention turns to the knockout rounds where every match decides a team’s fate. Co-hosts Mexico and the United States were the first to guarantee their places in the Round of 32 after strong group-stage performances. Other nations will join them as the group phase progresses.
The knockout stage means sudden-death matches—win and advance, lose and your tournament ends. Unlike the group matches where teams face multiple opponents, here only one game determines survival.
Highlights on Key Qualifiers
Mexico secured top position in Group A with two early wins, including a vital victory over South Korea. Their next opponent in the Round of 32 will be one of the third-place teams from Groups C, E, F, H, or I.
The United States finished first in Group D for only the third time in their history, setting up a Round of 32 match against a third-place team from Groups B, E, F, I, or J.
Germany became the first non-North American squad to qualify, clinching Group E after a comeback win versus Ivory Coast. Their upcoming opponent will come from the third-place teams in Groups A, B, C, D, or F.
Argentina, led by Lionel Messi who made World Cup history as the all-time top scorer, topped their group following a crucial win over Austria. They await their knockout foe as third-place qualifiers are finalized.
France advanced with a 3-0 win over Iraq, powered by Kylian Mbappe’s two goals. The final group game against Norway will decide the group winner but either way, France is set for the knockouts.
Norway secured qualification thanks to Erling Haaland’s brace in a narrow 3-2 win over Senegal. The battle for the top spot between France and Norway will be settled in their next meeting.
Colombia earned a spot after a late second-half goal helped them overcome DR Congo. Their defense held firm during intense pressure to preserve the win.
Knockout Stage Format and Rules
The Round of 32 marks the start of single-elimination matches. There are no draws here; each game must produce a winner to move forward.
If teams are tied after 90 minutes, a 30-minute extra time period follows. Should the deadlock remain, the outcome is decided by penalties.
Group winners face runners-up or top third-place finishers from other groups based on a preset bracket arrangement.
Third-Place Team Qualification
The 12 teams finishing third in their groups are ranked by points and goal metrics. The best eight among them earn spots in the knockout stage.
