How Teams Qualified for Round of 32

Understanding the Round of 32 Format

This stage moves to single elimination — no points, no draws. Matches tied after 90 minutes go into 30 minutes of extra time. If still level, penalty shootouts decide who advances.

First-place group finishers face runners-up or top third-place teams in predetermined pairings. Winners progress to the Round of 16, then quarterfinals, semifinals, and ultimately the final.

Advancing Through the Tournament

The tournament started with 48 teams divided into 14 groups of four. Each team played three group matches. Wins earn 3 points, draws 1, losses none. Ties on points are broken by goal difference and goals scored.

The top two from each group along with the best eight third-place teams advanced to the knockout stage. From here, only wins matter to move forward.
