Changes to International Breaks for 2026 After FIFA World Cup

Following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which featured an expanded field of 48 teams and lasted six weeks, the usual September and October international breaks have been merged into one extended window. The upcoming international break will run from September 21 to October 6, 2026. This 16-day period allows national teams to schedule up to four matches within those two weeks.

Why the September and October Breaks Were Combined

Historically, FIFA scheduled separate international breaks in September and October, each lasting about a week. But because the 2026 World Cup stretched over a longer period than previous tournaments, FIFA opted to give players more time to recover and reintegrate with their clubs before resuming international play. Merging the two breaks creates a longer camp period for national teams, giving coaches a better opportunity to work with their squads and install tactics more thoroughly.

November 2026 Still Has a Traditional Break

The November international break remains unchanged. From November 9 to November 17, 2026, national teams worldwide will meet again for up to two matches during this window.

Looking Ahead: Preparing for the 2030 World Cup Cycle

With Spain crowned champions in 2026, national federations are already focusing on the next World Cup cycle leading to the tournament set to take place in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco in 2030. The combined September-October break marks the first chance for teams to advance their squads and strategies toward qualifying and competing in the next four-year cycle.
