Champions League Format Explained
The tournament switched from the traditional group stage to a 36-team league phase starting in 2024. Each team plays eight matches against different opponents, split evenly between home and away games. Teams come from four seeding pots, and all 36 are ranked in one league table. Wins earn three points, draws one point.
After the league phase ends, the top eight teams go straight to the Round of 16. Those finishing ninth through 24th enter two-legged playoffs for knockout spots. Teams placed 25th or lower exit European competition.
