Zechiël Grateful for Staying at Feyenoord After Lille Move Collapse

Gjivai Zechiël stood on the brink of a major move this summer. Lille OSC pushed hard, Feyenoord held firm, and a 22-year-old midfielder had to weigh up the biggest decision of his young career.

In the end, nothing changed on paper. On the pitch, everything did.

At the end of August, Lille came knocking with serious intent. Several bids went in, the final one reportedly rising to around €17 million including bonuses. For a player still at the start of his top-flight journey, that figure underlined just how quickly his stock has soared.

“That was pretty serious,” Zechiël admitted in an interview with Voetbal International. “At that moment, it seemed better for me from a sporting point of view.”

For a while, it looked like the logical next step. A top league, a club with a strong reputation for developing talent, a new country, a new challenge. The kind of move many Eredivisie players dream about.

But Feyenoord had other ideas. Internally, the message was clear: Zechiël was no longer a promising squad player, but a key figure. Someone to build around, not to cash in on.

The pressure from France grew. So did Feyenoord’s resolve.

Feeling at home in Rotterdam

Time has given Zechiël a different perspective on the saga.

“Looking back, I am grateful and happy that I am here, because I am simply doing well here,” he said. The words come without regret, more with a sense of relief.

“I feel at home here, and I am grateful to be out on the pitch here. I am happy that I get to play for this club.”

You can see it in his body language on matchdays. He no longer looks like a youngster trying to survive in the first team. He looks like he belongs.

“In the end, you grow into the team, you start to understand your role in the team, but also the staff you are dealing with,” Zechiël explained. “That is, of course, also an important part of it. The staff and our style of play suit me very well.”

That connection has become one of the main reasons the Lille move never crossed the final line. Feyenoord’s hierarchy viewed him as too important to lose at this stage of the project. The club dug in, and the deal collapsed.

Feyenoord move fast to tie him down

Once the window closed, Feyenoord wasted no time.

At the start of September, ESPN reporter Sinclair Bischop revealed that the Rotterdam club had reached a verbal agreement with Zechiël over a contract extension. His current deal already runs until mid-2028, but Feyenoord want to secure his future on improved terms and send a clear signal to the market.

“If everything goes well, that should be possible,” the right-footer said about the new agreement. No fanfare, no big statements. Just a quiet confirmation that both sides know where this is heading.

A collapsed transfer has turned into a long-term commitment.

Flying start to the season

On the pitch, Zechiël has answered every question in the best possible way: with numbers.

Across Feyenoord’s first six competitive matches of the new season, the midfielder has produced four goals and three assists. Those are not the stats of a player still wondering what might have been in France. Those are the stats of someone thriving where he is.

The Lille move may have slipped away, but his trajectory has not. If anything, it has sharpened. And if this is what Zechiël looks like after choosing to stay, the real question is how far he can push Feyenoord while he’s still in Rotterdam.
