Yves Bissouma Joins Ajax on Long-Term Deal

Ajax have ended the uncertainty around Yves Bissouma’s future, confirming the Mali international has signed a long-term deal in Amsterdam after leaving the Premier League. The former Tottenham and Brighton midfielder has joined on a contract running immediately through to June 30, 2027, giving him a fresh stage at the Johan Cruyff ArenA to rebuild a career that drifted off course in London.

His final season at Spurs told its own story. Just 11 appearances, long spells out of the side and a manager’s trust he never fully secured. His time in north London became tangled with disciplinary problems, including a high-profile suspension two years ago after social media footage appeared to show him using nitrous oxide. For a player once seen as one of the most dynamic midfielders in England, it was a sharp fall.

Now comes the reset.

Bissouma arrives in the Netherlands with his chin up and his intentions clear. The 28-year-old spoke with obvious pride about joining one of European football’s great institutions. “I feel really happy. It means a lot, because Ajax is one of the biggest clubs in Europe. And for me to be part of the trip of this great club is something nice,” he said, the relief of finally finding a new home almost audible.

The move did not catch him off guard. By the time the contract was signed, the groundwork had been laid for weeks. “Not really, because I've spoken to a lot of people here beforehand. They told me about the project and that was very interesting to me. That's why I'm here,” he explained. “They just told me the project, what they really want to do this year and for the years that are coming as well.”

Ajax see more than a reclamation project. They see a spine.

The club’s recruitment team have targeted Bissouma as a piece to harden a midfield that has lacked edge and experience. His ball-winning, his ability to cover ground, his comfort in several roles across the middle third – all of it fits a side trying to reassert itself domestically and in Europe. From Bissouma’s perspective, the mission is simple. “I’m a winner and then you want to win everything. That’s my desire and I’m ready to start,” he said, setting the bar high from day one.

He is not just talking about tackles and transitions, either. Ajax, a club built on youth and academy pathways, will ask him to lead as much as to chase. Bissouma is ready to embrace that responsibility in a dressing room full of emerging talent. “I'm just going to give them some advice, like how I see things and how I see football. Just to let them know I'm here for all of them, all of the youngest players. They can talk to me, we can have a very good conversation about anything,” he added.

Behind the scenes, this was no last-minute scramble. Technical Director Jordi Cruijff revealed that Ajax had monitored Bissouma’s situation for months, moving decisively once it became clear he would leave Tottenham as a free agent. “Discussions with Yves began in August and we are delighted that he has now signed for Ajax. We have brought in an experienced player who knows what it takes to perform at the highest level. He is capable of playing in several positions, and we hope he will be available for selection as soon as possible,” Cruijff said.

A free transfer, a point to prove, and a club desperate to restore its standards. Ajax have handed Bissouma a three-year runway. What he does with it will define the next chapter of his career – and could shape the rhythm of their midfield for seasons to come.
