Youri Tielemans Faces Backlash After Aston Villa Comments
Youri Tielemans did not need long to discover that leaving Aston Villa is one thing. Ranking them is quite another.
The 29-year-old midfielder, now a Manchester United player after a £35 million move, walked himself into a storm during United’s pre-season tour when he tried to explain his decision to swap Villa Park for Old Trafford.
He began by crediting Villa for reviving his career. Then came the line that lit the fuse.
“But there are clubs above Villa, and Manchester United is one of them,” he told reporters.
For a fanbase still basking in the glow of Unai Emery’s revolution, it was a sentence that cut deep. This is a club that has just won the UEFA Europa League, finished fourth in the Premier League and punched its ticket to the UEFA Champions League. The idea that Villa simply sit beneath a “hierarchy” of English football, with United placed above them, did not go down well.
Social media did the rest. Clips of the quote spread, Villa supporters voiced their anger, and Tielemans quickly realised he had misjudged the tone.
By Thursday, the Belgian had moved to repair the damage. In a public message, he rowed back on the way his comments had come across and stressed his respect for his former club.
“Never meant for my words in the press yesterday to offend anyone or the institution of Aston Villa Football Club, which I massively respect and I'm grateful for the past 3 years,” he wrote. “I must however admit my mistake and apologise for my choice of words, will be more careful in the future. Wishing the club the best in the future.”
It was a clear attempt to calm a situation that had escalated far beyond a routine pre-season interview. Tielemans had been a central figure for Villa since arriving from Leicester City in the summer of 2023, making 134 appearances, scoring 10 goals and supplying 25 assists. He was part of the core that helped drive Emery’s side into Europe and then onto the continental stage.
Now, though, his future is tied to Old Trafford. United activated a release clause in his Villa contract to secure him on a five-year deal running to 2031, a move that underlines how highly they rate his experience and quality in midfield.
The timing is significant for the player. Last season he wrestled with fitness problems, calf and ankle injuries limiting him to 35 appearances in all competitions. Even so, he did enough to retain his place at international level and arrived at United off the back of a strong summer with Belgium at the World Cup, where he helped his country reach the quarter-finals before they fell to Spain. His standout moment came in the Round of 32, scoring twice against Senegal in a commanding individual display.
Now comes the real test. With the Premier League season a week away, both of his current and former clubs are deep into their final preparations. Manchester United face AC Milan in their last pre-season outing, a fixture that offers Tielemans the perfect chance to let his football drown out the noise of the past few days.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, must reset after a bruising midweek. Emery’s side lost 2–1 to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, a reminder of the thin margins at the top level after a year of almost unbroken progress.
Their response will come on the south coast. Villa open their Premier League campaign away to Brighton on 23 August, a tricky start for a team now expected to perform like a Champions League regular rather than an overachiever. Manchester United begin a day earlier, travelling to Hull City on 22 August, with Tielemans likely to be under close scrutiny from both sets of supporters.
One club chasing its way back to the summit. Another determined to prove it already belongs there.
Tielemans, caught in the middle, will know that from here on, every touch will be judged as keenly as every word.
