Youri Tielemans Addresses Aston Villa Fans After Controversial Comments

Youri Tielemans has moved quickly to calm the storm he created with Aston Villa supporters after describing Manchester United as a “club above” his former side.

The Belgium midfielder, 29, joined United this summer on a five-year deal after the Old Trafford club activated a £35m release clause in his Villa contract. His departure ended a three-year spell at Villa Park that began with his move from Leicester City in 2023 and brought 134 appearances and 10 goals.

Tielemans, speaking on United’s pre-season tour, initially struck a warm tone about his time in Birmingham, crediting Villa with restoring his level.

“Back to my best level,” he said of his spell under Unai Emery.

Then came the line that lit the fuse.

“But there are clubs above Villa, and Manchester United is one of them.”

Those words travelled fast. Sections of the Villa fanbase bristled at what they saw as a slight on a club that had backed him through dips in form and given him a central role in a resurgent side.

By Thursday, Tielemans had decided he could not leave the comment hanging. He turned to Instagram to address the reaction and offer a public apology.

“Never meant for my words in the press yesterday to offend anyone or the institution of Aston Villa Football Club, which I massively respect and I'm grateful for the past 3 years,” he wrote.

“I must however admit my mistake and apologise for my choice of words, will be more careful in the future.

“Wishing the club the best in the future.”

For Villa fans, the episode is a sharp reminder of the fault lines that often appear when a key player crosses to a direct rival. For Tielemans, now settling into life at Old Trafford, it is an early lesson in how every word lands when you leave one ambitious Premier League club for another that still trades on its global stature.
