Young Footballer Killed in Highway Tragedy

The journey home from a simple football gathering ended in tragedy for 22-year-old player Ebenezer Anning, who was killed by a speeding vehicle on the Assin Foso–Kumasi stretch of the N8 Highway.

The incident occurred at Assin Asempanaye in the Assin North District of the Central Region. Anning, a native of Assin Dansame, had been returning from a friend’s place, where he had gone to watch a football match, when his life was cut short as he attempted to cross the road.

Police sources told the Ghana News Agency that Anning died on the spot after being struck by a Toyota Voxy with registration number GW 2890–26. The vehicle was travelling from Obuasi towards Mankessim when it hit the young footballer, leaving him with multiple severe injuries.

The impact left no room for rescue. His body was first taken to the Assin Praso Presbyterian Hospital and later transferred to the New Edubiase Government Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, as the formal processes around his death begin.

The driver, identified as Enock Nyarko, did not flee the wider scene for long. He later reported himself to the Assin Praso District Police Command, claiming Anning suddenly crossed the road from his blind side, giving him no time to react.

A promising football life ended on the tarmac, with the game he loved providing the final act of an ordinary day that turned fatal.
