Xavi Reflects on Barcelona's Legends, Coaching Journey, and Rising Stars
Xavi Hernandez stands as one of the most influential figures in Barcelona history, having been central to what many consider the greatest club team ever assembled under Pep Guardiola. His career spanned eras marked by stars like Luis Figo, Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi, and a midfield including Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets.
Figo’s Departure and Its Impact
Xavi recalls the shock when Luis Figo moved from Barcelona to Real Madrid in 2000. “Figo was our leader and captain. The dressing room was stunned,” he said. He compared it to the impact if Lamine Yamal or Messi had made the same switch.
This move wasn’t just about losing talent. Xavi believes the aftermath led to a dry spell of three to four years without trophies for Barcelona.
Ronaldinho’s Arrival Changed Everything
The mood at the club lifted significantly with Ronaldinho’s arrival. Xavi explained that Ronaldinho transformed their mentality much like Johan Cruyff did decades earlier. “We knew having the best player in the world meant we had to win,” Xavi said, crediting Ronaldinho with bringing joy and excitement back to the team. He also noted that Ronaldinho’s later decline was more about mentality than lifestyle.
Cruyff’s philosophy had a deep influence too. Xavi acknowledged, “He changed our entire approach—order, position, possession, and bold attacking play through triangles.” Without these ideas, Xavi doubted he would have succeeded given his own physical limitations.
Messi, Iniesta, and Busquets: The Heart of Barcelona
The next generation took Barcelona to new heights. Xavi compared having Messi in the squad to having Michael Jordan in basketball. Messi’s ability to turn the game around with a moment of brilliance was unmatched.
Xavi praised Iniesta as the greatest Spanish talent he’d seen, capable of playing anywhere with ease, and Busquets as the best defensive midfielder ever, noting his exceptional anticipation and decision-making.
One of Xavi’s standout memories is the 2011 Champions League final victory against Manchester United at Wembley. He highlighted their tactical dominance and possession style as key factors and treasured compliments from Sir Alex Ferguson and Rio Ferdinand afterward.
Neymar, Suarez, and Ibrahimovic’s Roles
Xavi fondly remembered Neymar’s time at Camp Nou, calling him the closest player to Messi’s level during his peak. Alongside Messi and Luis Suarez, they formed an almost unstoppable frontline.
Suarez earned praise as a fierce competitor and humble teammate, while Xavi dismissed rumors about dressing-room issues with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, insisting any problems were purely tactical under Guardiola. Ibrahimovic’s talent and personality remained highly respected.
Lamine Yamal and Emerging Talent
Having witnessed Messi’s rise, Xavi knows the pressure on young talents like Lamine Yamal. He commended Yamal’s exceptional decision-making even at 15, saying such instincts are rare and mark a true genius.
Comparing Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning squad with today’s players, Xavi pointed out differences in style but praised the current generation’s command over transitions and counter-attacks.
Reflections on Coaching Barcelona
Transitioning to management at Barcelona brought emotional challenges for Xavi. He described coaching the club as overwhelming due to its significance in his life. Poor results affected him deeply.
Despite difficulties, Xavi is proud of achievements during tough times, including winning La Liga and the Supercopa amid financial and sporting turmoil.
Since leaving Barcelona in 2024, Xavi has embarked on a new path as the Netherlands head coach. Appointed in August with a contract until the 2030 World Cup, he has already named his first squad for the Nations League.
This role links back to Dutch football’s influence on his career—from Cruyff’s philosophy to Louis van Gaal’s debut opportunity and Frank Rijkaard’s guidance at Camp Nou.
No matter where Xavi’s journey leads, he remains a beloved figure at Barcelona, and many will watch closely as he shapes the future of the Dutch national team.
