Xabi Alonso Seeks Clarity on Enzo Fernández's Future
Xabi Alonso wants the Enzo Fernández saga off his desk – and quickly.
Manchester City are weighing up a fresh move for the Argentina international, with the European champions considering whether to test Chelsea’s resolve again after letting an earlier deadline pass.
Chelsea had set a clear marker two weeks ago: any club wanting Fernández had to meet their £120m valuation by that point. City did not bite. The clock ticked on, the window moved into its final stretch, and the 23-year-old drifted back towards Stamford Bridge and into Alonso’s orbit.
For a while, Real Madrid had appeared his most likely escape route. Links were strong earlier in the summer, but once the Spanish giants distanced themselves from a deal, the spotlight swung firmly onto Enzo Maresca’s City. Now, with new reports suggesting City are prepared to return with an offer despite missing Chelsea’s cut-off, the midfielder’s future is again hanging in the balance.
On the pitch, though, Alonso has started to fold him back into the squad.
Fernández returned to full training and was included in the matchday group for Chelsea’s Premier League opener on Monday night. He began on the bench but was sent on in the 65th minute, helping the Blues see out a 3-2 win and offering a reminder of his control and composure in midfield.
After the final whistle, Alonso was pressed on whether that cameo marked a fresh start at Stamford Bridge or a brief stopover before a blockbuster move.
“In football, I am not surprised by anything,” he told BBC Radio Five Live. “We will see. My wish is that we know what will happen for the future but we will see this week.”
No guarantees. No promises. Just a manager desperate for clarity as the window narrows.
Chelsea’s broader strategy is clear enough: trim the squad and raise funds. The focus in the remaining weeks is firmly on outgoings. Liam Delap is in talks over a switch to Nottingham Forest, while Mamadou Sarr is closing in on a move of his own. Nicolas Jackson, Mykhailo Mudryk and Marc Guiu are all expected to be ushered towards the exit as well, whether on loan or in permanent deals, as the club reshapes Maresca’s options.
Dario Essugo has also been placed on the loan list, another young name made available as Chelsea try to create space and flexibility.
Amid all that movement, one decision towers above the rest. Does Fernández stay as a cornerstone of Alonso’s midfield, or does City finally test Chelsea’s resolve with an offer too serious to ignore?
