Xabi Alonso Confirms Enzo Fernandez Will Play Against Luton Town

Xabi Alonso insists Enzo Fernandez will be part of Chelsea’s plans against Luton Town on Thursday night, even as Manchester City circle with growing intent.

The Chelsea head coach confirmed he expects the midfielder to be involved in the Carabao Cup second-round tie at Stamford Bridge, despite an anticipated late push from City before the transfer window shuts on September 1.

“Yes, so we expect that he's involved,” Alonso said. “He has trained, he's training really well, he's a good professional and he will be involved.”

The backdrop is anything but calm. Fernandez was loudly booed by sections of the Chelsea support and loudly backed by others when he came off the bench in Monday’s 3-2 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage, a reaction that underlined just how strained the relationship has become.

The Argentine has been open about his desire to leave Chelsea, yet he continues to train with the squad and has remained available for selection. For now, Alonso is treating him like any other key player.

City’s interest has not gone away. Their pursuit is being driven by head coach Enzo Maresca, who knows Fernandez well from their time together at Chelsea and believes he can drop straight into his midfield.

Asked bluntly whether he wants to keep Fernandez, Alonso did not hide his admiration but refused to make promises.

“We want to have the best team possible. We know his qualities. He has shown it and we have to wait, but we will think about tomorrow and let's see how things develop,” he said.

The uncertainty stretches beyond just one player. Alonso was pressed on whether Chelsea would only sanction a sale if they had a replacement lined up. He pushed back on the idea of any hard-and-fast rule.

“It is always about understanding the context, the situation, timings, circumstances, so there is not a defined rule for everything,” the Spaniard explained. “You need to know how things have worked, what you want, what you want for the future, so I don't have the rules in stone. We need to assess each situation.”

So Fernandez trains, prepares and, in Alonso’s eyes, plays. City wait. The clock ticks towards September 1.
