Wrexham's Championship Evolution: Ready for Swansea Clash

Phil Parkinson says Wrexham will walk into Swansea City on Saturday as a very different Championship animal to the one that left south Wales bruised last season.

The Red Dragons were edged out 2-1 by Mitor Matos’ side in December, a defeat that stung but did not derail them. They regrouped, surged through the second half of the campaign and finished seventh in 2025-26 – their highest placing in the second tier.

Now the stakes rise again. Swansea, top of the Championship after taking 10 points from a possible 12, welcome Wrexham for a prime-time clash at 20:00 BST. The league leaders look strong. Parkinson is convinced his team look stronger.

The evidence, in his eyes, came in midweek at Millwall.

Wrexham won 2-0 at The Den last season. This time they went back and dismantled Millwall 3-0. The scoreline alone tells a story. The performance, Parkinson argues, tells a better one.

Asked whether Wrexham are better equipped than on their last visit to Swansea, he did not hesitate.

“Absolutely,” he said. “The Millwall game is a good example of that, where we won 2-0 down there last year and we beat them 3-0 this year.

“But they were very different games in terms of the control we had in the game this time around.

“We looked to a more accomplished Championship side this time around. The players have got used to the level and of course we've added quality into the group.”

That is the crux of Parkinson’s confidence. The same club, the same manager, many of the same players – but a squad now hardened by a full season in the division and sharpened by targeted additions.

Last winter in Swansea, Wrexham left with a gut-wrenching defeat and a sense of what might have been. This weekend, they return with a manager who believes his side no longer just survive Championship tests, they shape them.
