Vinicius Under Pressure as Diomande Emerges at Real Madrid
The numbers are not disastrous. One goal, three assists in seven games across La Liga and the Champions League. On paper, Vinicius Jr. is contributing.
On the pitch, though, the feeling is different. And at Real Madrid, feelings matter.
The Brazilian’s slow start to the 2026/27 season has opened a crack in what once looked like an unshakeable status on the left wing. Through that crack, Yan Diomande is suddenly bursting into view.
Elche game exposes the contrast
The turning point, or at least the night the debate went public, came in the 3-2 win over Elche.
Real Madrid raced into a two-goal lead inside half an hour and looked ready to stroll. Then they switched off. Elche clawed their way back to 2-2, the Bernabéu tension rose, and only a stoppage-time strike from Carlos Espi spared Mourinho’s side from embarrassment.
In the chaos, one thing stood out. Diomande looked alive. Vinicius did not.
The Ivorian winger, still feeling his way into the first team, seized his chance. He drove at defenders, switched flanks, asked questions. Vinicius, by contrast, struggled again to leave his mark on the game, his dribbles breaking down, his usual spark dulled.
That contrast has not gone unnoticed inside or outside the club.
“Beware of the threat posed by Diomande”
On Cadena SER, journalist Tomas Roncero put words to what many Madridistas were already thinking: there is now real competition for Vinicius.
He underlined Diomande’s versatility, pointing to the way the youngster handled both wings during the Elche match.
“Beware of the threat posed by Diomande, who played well on the right today and even better on the left,” Roncero warned, a line that will echo in any dressing room.
Roncero then cut to the core of the issue at a club that lives off ruthless standards.
“I've said it, and I suppose Vinicius's people will be angry as always because here, no matter how much affection you show someone, they don't realise that at Real Madrid, when someone isn't playing so well, you have to say so, otherwise it wouldn't be Real Madrid.”
That is the environment Vinicius has always claimed to embrace. Now it is staring straight back at him.
Mourinho’s dilemma brewing
Inside Valdebebas, Jose Mourinho is not panicking. He still backs Vinicius. The coach believes that once the goals start flowing, the winger’s confidence and explosiveness will follow, restoring the version that tormented defences in previous seasons.
For now, that trust holds. But Diomande’s rise changes the landscape.
The young wide man has shown he can tilt games, not just fill minutes. His display against Elche added weight to the idea that he is ready for more than cameos, that he can handle meaningful responsibility on either flank.
That puts Mourinho on the brink of a classic Real Madrid decision: reputation versus form.
Vinicius has promised to respond, to sharpen his finishing and rediscover the aggressive, fearless edge that made him a star. If that response does not arrive soon, Mourinho may be forced to act.
A spell on the bench would not necessarily signal a loss of faith from the coach. At this club, it would send a different message: nobody, however established, is bigger than the level required to wear the shirt.
Right now, Diomande is making that level harder to ignore.
