Vangelis Pavlidis: The Striker Transforming Benfica Under Mourinho
Vangelis Pavlidis is living the kind of season that changes careers and rewrites reputations.
At Estadio da Luz, the Greek striker has become the sharp edge of Jose Mourinho’s Benfica, scoring 21 goals in 29 Liga Portugal games and dragging the Eagles into the heart of a ferocious title fight. Under most managers, that would be headline enough. Under Mourinho, it feels like the beginning of something bigger.
Pavlidis and the Mourinho effect
Since Mourinho walked through the door in September 2025, Pavlidis has caught fire. Twenty-five goals in all competitions under the “Special One” tell their own story, but the numbers only scratch the surface of what’s happening between player and coach.
Pavlidis arrived in Lisbon in 2024 carrying a €100 million release clause and the weight of expectation that comes with it. Now, he looks every inch the forward that kind of figure demands. The league table says Benfica are unbeaten yet still only third, locked in a three-way race and chasing from behind. The performances say Pavlidis has become the reference point of Mourinho’s attack.
Speaking to Greek outlet Fosonline, the 27-year-old didn’t bother with diplomatic distance when asked about the man on the touchline.
“Special One! There's not much more to say about Mourinho. Just two words… He has a passion for football. He loves the sport, he loves his players, he's always honest. He knows and understands everything about football and how to manage his teams. His career speaks for itself. He's a coach of another level, he's the best of all.”
For a striker in his peak years, that kind of endorsement is revealing. This is not a youngster dazzled by a famous name; this is a leading forward describing a manager who has elevated his game and justified every inch of his reputation with daily work.
Unbeaten, but under pressure
Benfica’s league record this season is immaculate in one sense and unforgiving in another. They have not lost, yet they trail. Third in the table, two points behind Sporting CP and seven off leaders Porto, they are walking a tightrope where draws feel like defeats and every missed chance echoes.
The margin for error has gone. Mourinho knows it. Pavlidis certainly does.
All of it funnels into Sunday’s trip across the city to Estadio Jose Alvalade, a Lisbon derby that will do more than shake local bragging rights. With Sporting still holding a game in hand, anything less than victory could shred what remains of Benfica’s title hopes.
Hostile atmosphere, high stakes, thin cushion. These are the nights when a No 9 earns his status.
Future questions, present focus
Pavlidis is tied to Benfica until 2029, and his form has inevitably drawn glances from Europe’s elite. A prolific striker, thriving under Mourinho, with a nine-figure release clause attached – that combination tends to light up recruitment departments.
For now, he sounds settled. Portugal suits him, Benfica need him, and the relationship with Mourinho is clearly central to his current trajectory. Yet he hasn’t closed the door on a return home one day.
“You never know what will happen. In the future, maybe. We'll see. Of course, I watch the Greek league, I follow the teams and my national team colleagues,” he said, leaving just enough space for the idea of a late-career homecoming.
That is for another time. The present is less romantic and far more ruthless.
On Sunday, under the lights at Alvalade, with Sporting in front, Porto further ahead and the title race threatening to run away from them, Benfica will look to one man to keep their season alive. Pavlidis has talked about Mourinho being “of another level.”
Now he has to play at one.
