UEFA Unveils Clearline Platform to Clarify VAR Decisions for Fans
UEFA has rolled out a new public platform called Clearline designed to explain video assistant referee (VAR) decisions during Champions League matches. This digital tool aims to provide supporters and clubs with clear insights into the criteria behind key refereeing calls.
A New Level of Transparency in VAR Use
The governing body has created an open-access online resource where football fans, clubs, players, and journalists can understand exactly when and how VAR is applied. The platform spells out specific cases like penalties, direct red cards, offside rulings, attacking build-ups, and mistaken identity incidents.
Driving Consistency in Champions League Refereeing
Under the guidance of European refereeing chief Roberto Rosetti, Clearline emphasizes consistency and clarity. It hosts official explanations for VAR decisions made during Champions League games and outlines UEFA's standardized review procedures. After matches, fans can visit the platform to compare live refereeing decisions with stored video examples.
Unified Criteria Developed with Europe's Top Leagues
The platform stems from collaboration between UEFA and refereeing heads from the continent’s top five domestic leagues. They agreed on a common VAR language to harmonize decision-making across European competitions. According to reports, this initiative aligns with transparency efforts underway in domestic football, such as Spain’s CTA preparing a refereeing manual.
Building Trust for Future European Matches
By demystifying the video review process, UEFA hopes to reduce post-match controversies and increase confidence in refereeing. Champions League audiences can now measure decisions against clear, standardized guidelines from Europe’s leading refereeing authority. The platform will keep expanding its library with new cases as future seasons unfold, ensuring ongoing access to up-to-date officiating criteria for supporters, players, and coaches.
