Tottenham Signs Andy Robertson on Free Transfer
Tottenham have moved decisively in the summer market, confirming the signing of Scotland captain Andy Robertson on a free transfer after his Liverpool contract expired.
It is a deal that has been months in the making. Spurs pushed hard for Robertson in January, only for Liverpool to slam the door shut when they failed to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma. The move collapsed then. It hasn’t now.
Robertson, who made 378 appearances for Liverpool and became one of the defining full-backs of the Jürgen Klopp era, will officially join Spurs on 1 July. The change of manager in north London has not altered the club’s conviction; if anything, Roberto De Zerbi has doubled down on it.
The new Tottenham head coach has already nailed his colours to the mast.
“Andy is someone I've admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team,” De Zerbi said, underlining exactly why Spurs were prepared to wait.
“He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch. I can’t wait to start working with him and seeing the positive impact he will have on everyone around him.”
That is the crux of this move. Spurs are not just signing a left-back; they are importing a standard-setter. A player who has lived through title races, Champions League nights and the relentless expectation that comes with wearing a Liverpool shirt.
For Robertson, it marks the end of a major chapter at Anfield and the start of a new one in London, where his experience and edge will be central to De Zerbi’s attempt to sharpen a Tottenham side still searching for a new identity under fresh leadership.
He arrives without a fee, but with a weight of expectation. And that, for a club with Tottenham’s ambitions, is exactly the kind of free transfer that changes the feel of a dressing room overnight.
