Thomas Tuchel Challenges Trent Alexander-Arnold to Prove His Worth

Thomas Tuchel has admitted his treatment of Trent Alexander-Arnold during the early months of his England reign was not entirely fair – and has challenged the Real Madrid defender to prove he belongs back at the heart of his plans.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, the England manager reflected on the decision-making that left Alexander-Arnold watching the World Cup from home. Since Tuchel took charge in October 2024, the right-back had featured for just 26 minutes, a late substitute outing against Andorra, before this latest recall.

“Was it always fair? Maybe not from my side,” Tuchel said, before pointing to the timing of international breaks and the form of those already in the squad. “But if you remember, the next camp was September.”

England caught fire quickly under Tuchel. Results came, performances improved, and the manager chose not to disturb a winning formula. That surge, he says, effectively shut the door on Alexander-Arnold for months.

“We were suddenly flying and we stuck to the same squad in October and that was it for him,” Tuchel admitted. “There was never a chance for him to come back whether that was [fair] or not. I just trusted the guys who were in camp.”

Alexander-Arnold has had to rebuild his case away from the international spotlight. Three starts for Real Madrid this season under Jose Mourinho have shifted the narrative, his form in Spain finally strong enough to drag him back into the England picture.

Tuchel insists, though, that this is no sentimental recall. Selection, he says, is earned, not gifted, and the standards inside the England camp will not bend for reputations or past glories.

“You don’t come to relax. You don’t come to take a break,” he said, laying down a clear marker to both the old guard and the returning faces. “You come to perform and it’s difficult to perform for England and the guys who perform now have our trust. And the guys who come new into camp, we demand the highest of them. It includes Trent but it’s not exclusively for him. It’s for everyone who comes to our camps.”

The message is blunt: a call-up is a privilege, not a comfort zone.

For Alexander-Arnold, the real battle starts on the training pitch. Tuchel wants intensity, consistency, and evidence that the defender can transfer his Real Madrid form onto the international stage, not just in flashes but as a reliable part of England’s structure.

There will be little easing-in period. England face world champions Spain on Saturday in the UEFA Nations League, a fixture that offers nowhere to hide, before a tricky trip to Czechia. The schedule is unforgiving, and so is the competition for places.

If Alexander-Arnold wants a permanent route back under Tuchel, he will have to rip it from the hands of those who have kept England “flying” without him.
