Tchouameni Commits to Real Madrid as Mourinho Returns

Aurelien Tchouameni has delivered the clearest possible verdict on his future – and it is bad news for Manchester United.

The France international has agreed a new five-year contract with Real Madrid, tying himself to the Bernabeu just weeks after Jose Mourinho’s return to the club. At 26, Tchouameni is now locked in for what should be the prime of his career, ending United’s hopes of prising him away as they scramble to rebuild a broken midfield.

United’s midfield rebuild hits a wall

The timing could hardly be more pointed. News of Tchouameni’s fresh deal broke within hours of United finalising a £50million agreement with Chelsea for Andrey Santos, who is due to undergo a medical today (Thursday).

Santos is one of several names on United’s summer shortlist, alongside Alex Scott, Carlos Baleba, Felix Nmecha and Sander Berge. Ederson is also set for a medical now that Brazil’s World Cup campaign is over. United are trying to move quickly. The market is moving faster.

Even the Santos deal does not fully answer their midfield crisis. United went into the summer planning to sign multiple central midfielders, and that was before Manuel Ugarte picked up an injury at the World Cup. With Ugarte sidelined and Kobbie Mainoo currently their only fit senior central midfielder, the club’s need has turned from strategic planning into urgent firefighting.

They have already been priced out of moves for Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes. Tchouameni was the dream addition: a ready-made anchor at the very top of the game. That dream is now over.

Mourinho backs his midfield general

According to RMC Sport, Tchouameni was adamant he wanted to stay in Madrid, even as approaches arrived from elsewhere – most notably from Old Trafford. There had been a sense around Europe that Real might consider cashing in on the former Monaco man, given the depth of talent in their midfield and the constant churn of transfer speculation that surrounds the club.

Inside the Bernabeu, the view was very different. Securing a new contract for Tchouameni was treated as a priority. Mourinho’s arrival has only hardened that stance.

The Portuguese coach, back in charge of Madrid for a second spell, looks set to build his midfield around the Frenchman rather than trade him. Of the club’s four summer signings so far, only one is a midfielder, and even that addition – Bernardo Silva – operates in a very different role. Silva will not be the one trying to take Tchouameni’s place at the base of midfield. He will be looking for pockets of space higher up the pitch while the Frenchman patrols behind him.

For United, that distinction matters. They were not just searching for any midfielder. They were searching for a fulcrum. Tchouameni was exactly that. Mourinho has made sure he stays where he is.

Madrid close ranks

Real Madrid have also moved to shut down noise around other potential midfield moves. Speculation over a possible push for Enzo Fernandez grew loud enough that the club responded with a rare, detailed public statement.

“In light of the information and statements that have emerged in recent days regarding an alleged interest from Real Madrid C. F. in the player Enzo Fernández, the club wishes to state that it has not made any efforts, either directly or indirectly, aimed at signing the aforementioned player and, furthermore, has no intention of pursuing such an operation.

“Real Madrid wishes to express its utmost respect for Enzo Fernández, a great footballer whose career and quality are widely recognised, as well as for Chelsea FC, a club with which it maintains an excellent institutional relationship.

“Precisely out of respect for an institution like Chelsea FC and the principles of institutional loyalty that have always guided Real Madrid's actions, the club considers it necessary to categorically deny these speculations, which are unfounded and do not reflect reality.

“Real Madrid regrets that, despite the clarity of the facts and the absence of any action by the club, information continues to be disseminated that does not correspond to reality and only serves to create confusion among fans and unnecessarily harm the entities and individuals involved.”

The message is unmistakable. Madrid are closing ranks around their midfield and pushing back against the rumour mill. Tchouameni stays. Fernandez is not coming. The core is set.

United, meanwhile, are left looking elsewhere, knowing that one of the few elite holding midfielders potentially within reach has chosen to stay exactly where he is – under a manager who knows better than most how to keep Old Trafford at arm’s length.
