Strasbourg Names Hugo Oliveira as New Head Coach Following Gary O'Neil's Departure

Strasbourg announced on Sunday that Portuguese coach Hugo Oliveira will take charge of the team following the unexpected exit of Englishman Gary O'Neil last month.

O'Neil left the Ligue 1 club for Ipswich on June 26, having only joined Strasbourg in January. The club did not disclose how long Oliveira's contract will run. The 47-year-old arrives from Portuguese top-tier side Famalicao, where he served as head coach for the first time.

In a statement, Oliveira expressed his enthusiasm: "It's an honor to be here in Strasbourg and to join such a great project. I want to bring emotion, create memories, and give the best of myself to help the club develop."

Before taking the head coach role at Famalicao in December 2024, Oliveira mostly worked as a goalkeeping coach. His experience includes working with the Portugal national team, and clubs like Everton and Fulham in England, often collaborating with Marco Silva.

Under Oliveira's guidance, Famalicao achieved fifth place in the Primeira Liga last season—their highest finish since returning to the top division six years ago.

During his time at Strasbourg, O'Neil led the team to the Conference League semi-finals and finished eighth in Ligue 1.

Strasbourg will begin their new Ligue 1 season with a match against Marseille during the weekend of August 21-23.
