Sergio Busquets Returns to Barcelona as Assistant Coach of Barca Atletic
Sergio Busquets is back at Barcelona. Not in the centre circle this time, but on the touchline.
The club confirmed on Monday, August 17, that the former captain has returned as assistant coach of Barca Atletic, the reserve side that feeds directly into the first team. Three years after leaving, one of the pillars of the club’s greatest era has come home to begin the next chapter of his football life.
From sabbatical to the dugout
When Busquets walked away from Inter Miami and announced his retirement at the end of last year, he sounded in no rush to swap boots for a clipboard. After an Inter Miami match against the New England Revolution in October, he was asked in the mixed zone whether management was his next step.
“I think in the future, yes, but for now I prefer to take a sabbatical year,” he said then.
He took those months. He disappeared from the daily grind of elite football. Now the break is over.
The 36-year-old has officially started his coaching career, choosing to do it in the surroundings that shaped him as a player. Instead of screening the back four, he will now help shape Barcelona’s next generation.
Working under Belletti, aiming higher
Busquets joins the technical staff of current Barca Atletic head coach Belletti, another familiar face from the club’s modern history. The two former defenders of the shirt will now share a different kind of responsibility: turning raw talent into players ready for the Camp Nou spotlight.
Day to day, Busquets will assist Belletti with game preparation, training sessions and in-game management as Barca Atletic push to climb back up the Spanish league structure. The reserve side’s fortunes matter more than ever in a club trying to rebuild with youth; Busquets’ understanding of Barcelona’s positional play and tempo could become a powerful tool for those youngsters.
At the same time, he will be busy off the pitch. Busquets will work through his UEFA coaching licences, a mandatory step toward earning his senior head coaching badges. The classroom and the training ground will run in parallel.
This appointment does more than give Barca Atletic another assistant. It lays down a clear pathway for one of the club’s most intelligent midfielders to grow into a future on the bench.
For now, he starts with the kids. The question is how long it will be before Sergio Busquets is not just back at Barcelona, but leading a first team of his own.
