Seko Fofana Retires from International Duty with Ivory Coast
Seko Fofana has drawn a firm line under his international career with Ivory Coast, bowing out on his own terms and with the ultimate prize already in his hands.
The 31-year-old midfielder, one of the emotional leaders of the Elephants’ 2024 Africa Cup of Nations triumph on home soil, used his official Instagram account to say goodbye to supporters and close a chapter that delivered the pinnacle of his footballing life.
“Dear Ivorian fans, the time has come for me to turn the page,” Fofana wrote, framing his decision as a natural end rather than a reluctant exit. “It is with immense pride and deep gratitude that I had the privilege of fighting for my country. Winning the continent's greatest trophy was a childhood dream come true for me, and these memories will be forever etched in the hearts of millions of Ivorians.
“Thank you to my team-mates, the staff, and all of you for the strength and support. I will always remain the Elephants' number one supporter, and I cannot wait to see this new generation write its own history. There is no shortage of talent in our nation.”
Those lines read like a player content with his legacy. He leaves with a winner’s medal from a home AFCON and with the sense that the baton has been safely passed on.
From Paris prospects to Ivorian champion
Born in Paris and initially groomed in the French system, Fofana represented France at youth level up to the under-18s. His choice to commit to Ivory Coast came later, under Marc Wilmots, who handed him his first senior call-up and opened the door to the international career he has now brought to a close.
On the club stage, his journey has rarely followed a straight line. He came through Manchester City's academy, spent time at Fulham, and later shared a dressing room with Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, a measure of the level he reached in the global game.
Right now, he is on loan at FC Porto from Rennes, and he has already made his mark there too. Fofana played a decisive role in helping the Azuis e Brancos secure the domestic league title last season, adding another major honour to a CV that now stretches across several of Europe’s top competitions and the Asian game.
The international story, though, will always circle back to that night with Ivory Coast, that trophy, and a midfielder who chose to step away once the dream had been realised rather than chased.
