Scotland’s Road to the USA: Gallacher and Russell Talk World Cups

Dundee United will turn the CalForth Construction Arena into a little corner of Tartan Army heaven on Thursday 21 May, as two generations of United and Scotland royalty come together to talk World Cups, Brazil, and the long road back to the global stage.

Kevin Gallacher and Johnny Russell will headline a special “Road to the USA” evening in the Favela Lounge, a night built for supporters who have waited more than a quarter of a century to see Scotland walk out at a World Cup again.

Legends, stories and a World Cup summer

Hosted by STV Radio Football Show producer – and dyed-in-the-wool United fan – Callum Bell, the event promises something more than a routine Q&A. Gallacher and Russell will take the stage to dig into the kind of stories that rarely make it past the dressing-room door.

Gallacher, part of the last generation to see Scotland at a World Cup in 1998, and Russell, a modern United hero with his own international pedigree, will rewind through their careers in tangerine and dark blue. From the raw emotion of pulling on a Scotland shirt to the quieter, unseen moments behind the scenes on international duty, the pair will walk supporters through the reality of representing a nation that lives and breathes its football.

The timing could hardly be sharper. With World Cup fever rising again, the conversation will naturally swing towards this summer’s tournament across the USA, Mexico and Canada – and Scotland’s long-awaited return to the biggest stage of all.

A brutal group and a massive test

There’s no easing into it. Drawn in a fierce Group C alongside Brazil, Morocco and Haiti, Scotland face a daunting path if they are to make any kind of mark.

It is exactly the sort of challenge that will light up the room.

Gallacher and Russell will offer their take on what lies ahead: the intensity of facing world giants like Brazil, the tactical and physical demands of modern tournament football, and the mental resilience needed to handle the weight of a country’s hopes. For supporters, it’s a rare chance to hear how players think and feel when the anthem ends, the whistle goes, and a World Cup campaign begins.

Food, drink and straight-talking football

The evening runs from 7:00pm to 10:30pm in the Favela Lounge and is designed as a full night out, not just a speaking slot.

Guests will be welcomed with a drink on arrival and a one-course meal before the main event unfolds on stage. A live Q&A will then open the floor, giving fans the chance to put their own questions directly to Gallacher and Russell in an intimate, interactive setting.

No filtered soundbites. No scripted lines. Just two men who have lived it, talking football in a room full of people who feel it just as strongly.

How to be there

Individual tickets are priced at £65 per person, including VAT, while tables of 10 are available for £600, also inclusive of VAT.

Scotland are finally back on the World Cup stage. In Dundee, for one night in May, the build-up starts in earnest.
