Santos Lift FIFA Transfer Ban as Neymar's Agency Aids Jean Lucas Deal

Santos have finally wriggled free of their FIFA transfer embargo after settling a long-standing R$12 million (£1.7m/$2.3m) debt owed to Monaco for midfielder Jean Lucas – and they’ve done it with a major assist from Neymar’s family agency.

The punishment, which had frozen the club’s transfer activity since July, has been lifted following an emergency cash injection from NR Sports. In return, Santos and the company will share control over the negotiation and commercialisation of remaining kit sponsorship space that has yet to be sold.

The club confirmed the breakthrough in an official statement on Thursday, drawing a line under weeks of uncertainty in the market.

“Santos FC have settled the Transfer Ban and are once again clear to operate in the transfer market. The operation was made possible thanks to the support of NR Sports, through which the Club received an immediate financial injection. In return, Santos FC and the company will jointly negotiate kit sponsorship inventory that has not yet been commercialised,” the note read.

The deal doesn’t solve everything. Far from it. Santos are still juggling an estimated total debt of around £13m and fighting fires on multiple fronts. But it does remove the most immediate sporting headache: a squad stretched thin in the middle of a relegation battle.

With the embargo gone, the club can finally move on their main target. Former Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo is now clear to sign, with Diario Sport reporting that the Brazilian has been identified as the priority reinforcement. The playmaker is expected to slot straight in, tasked with bringing control and creativity to a Peixe side desperate for stability and points.

The timing could hardly be more critical. Santos sit just two points above the Campeonato Brasileiro relegation zone, their cushion as fragile as it sounds. This weekend brings a high-stakes clash against Corinthians, a fixture that always carries weight but now feels loaded with even more consequence.

Neymar is set to return to the starting XI after missing the 3-0 defeat to Palmeiras in the first leg of their Copa do Brasil quarter-final. His comeback adds star power at a moment when the club’s season hangs in the balance.

Santos now walk a tightrope. On one side, the need to somehow overturn that three-goal deficit at Vila Belmiro. On the other, the grind of the league and a crucial test against a Corinthians side led by Memphis Depay.

The transfer ban is gone. The pressure is not.
