Santiago Bueno Joins Club América on Loan

Santiago Bueno’s Wolves spell is on pause – and it might just be the start of a new chapter thousands of miles away.

The Uruguay centre-back has joined Mexican giants Club América on loan until the end of the season, leaving Wolverhampton Wanderers after failing to make the 25-man Premier League squad. The deal includes an option to buy, giving the Liga MX leaders the chance to make the move permanent if it works for both sides.

Bueno arrived at Molineux from Girona in August 2023 on a five-year contract, brought in as a long-term defensive piece. Across three seasons he clocked up 70 Premier League appearances, growing into a regular presence at the back.

His standout moment came last September, when he scored his first goal for Wolves in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham, a glimpse of the authority and timing that had persuaded the club to invest in him. He went on to feature 29 times in the league last term, even as the campaign unravelled and Wolves’ eight-year stay in the top flight ended in relegation to the Championship.

This season, though, the door closed. Bueno did not feature at all before the squad list was finalised, and the numbers game went against him.

“This was our most difficult move of the whole window due to the circumstances,” technical director Matt Jackson told the club’s website. “We were aware that there were open markets which may suit Santi after our deadline, and when we had too many players for the 25-man squad, it was unfortunately him who missed out.”

With Club América sitting top of the Liga MX table and pushing for more silverware, Bueno now walks into a club where pressure is permanent and standards are non-negotiable. For a 27-year-old international defender, it is a sharp turn in the career path – from a relegated English side to the heart of one of Mexico’s most demanding football institutions.

If he thrives under that glare, Wolves may not see him back.
