San Diego FC Signs Veteran Striker Cedric Bakambu from Real Betis

San Diego FC has secured the signing of experienced striker Cedric Bakambu on a free transfer after his departure from Real Betis. The 35-year-old forward has committed to a contract running through the 2026 MLS season, with options extending to 2027 and 2028. This move injects significant European and international experience into San Diego's squad as they aim for a strong run in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs.

Striker Joins MLS Side

Bakambu's transfer to San Diego marks a new chapter after his time in Spain's La Liga. Having recently represented DR Congo at the 2026 World Cup—starting three matches and helping the team reach the Round of 32—the forward arrives ready to boost the team’s attack in California.

Club Praises His Experience

"Cedric brings an incredible level of experience and proven quality to San Diego FC," said sporting director Tyler Heaps. "He has built an outstanding career competing at the highest levels in Europe and internationally, and his ability to consistently find the back of the net has been a defining part of his game. He understands what it takes to perform on the biggest stages and brings a winning mentality that will be extremely valuable to our group."Heaps added, "We're thrilled to welcome Cedric and his family to San Diego and look forward to seeing him make his mark with our club."

Proven Goal-Scorer Enhances Attack

Since breaking into professional football with Sochaux, Bakambu has amassed impressive numbers: 191 goals and 49 assists in 492 appearances across clubs including Villarreal, Marseille, Olympiacos, and Galatasaray. Internationally, he has netted 21 goals in 72 appearances for DR Congo, featuring in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

His arrival bolsters a frontline already featuring Anders Dreyer, Marcus Ingvartsen, and fellow 2026 World Cup forward Elias Achouri.

Playoff Push Intensifies

Currently sitting eighth in the Western Conference with 30 points, San Diego FC is aiming to secure a second consecutive spot in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. Bakambu’s signing is expected to add much-needed sharpness in attack during the final stretch of the regular season. Quickly integrating the seasoned forward alongside the existing attacking options will be key for maintaining their momentum as crucial fixtures approach.
