Salah Starts for Egypt in World Cup Clash Against Australia

Mohamed Salah is in. Of course he is.

Egypt’s captain and talisman has been named in the starting XI for their World Cup last-32 clash with Australia in Texas on Friday, just days after a hamstring scare threatened to derail his tournament.

The 34-year-old came off in Egypt’s final group game, a tense 1-1 draw with Iran a week ago, and spent the days since under intense scrutiny. Hossam Hassan did little to cool the anxiety on Thursday, admitting he was “not sure” if Salah would be fit to start.

The doubt has vanished. The risk has not.

Hassan has decided this is no time for caution, restoring Salah to lead a front line that also features Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush. It is an attacking statement from a coach who knows what is at stake: Egypt have never won a World Cup knockout tie. Neither have Australia. One of them will leave the home of the Dallas Cowboys having made history.

Salah arrives at this stage carrying both the burden and the numbers to justify it. He has one goal and two assists so far at this North American tournament and maintains his remarkable international strike rate of roughly a goal every other game for his country. When Egypt need a moment, they look to him. They usually have to.

The setting adds another layer. Under the lights in Texas, on a stage more used to helmets and shoulder pads, two footballing nations used to punching upwards now find a rare window of opportunity. Australia, dogged and disciplined, will see a vulnerable Egypt, led by a superstar who has just shaken off a hamstring niggle. Egypt will see a chance to step out of the nearly-men’s shadow.

The jeopardy does not end there. Victory brings a last-16 meeting with either Lionel Messi’s reigning champions Argentina or World Cup debutants Cape Verde. One path leads to a collision with the game’s ultimate benchmark, the other to a test against a fearless newcomer with nothing to lose.

For Egypt, though, everything starts with one decision: Salah starts. The captain is on the pitch, the gamble is made, and the margin for error has just shrunk to almost nothing.
