Safia Middleton-Patel Joins Watford on Loan from Manchester United

Safia Middleton-Patel has sealed a season-long loan move to Watford from Manchester United, handing the Wales goalkeeper the chance of regular football across the entire 2026-27 campaign.

The 21-year-old returns to Vicarage Road after a successful spell in the second half of the 2023-24 season, when she first pulled on the Hornets shirt. This time, she arrives as a planned cornerstone for a full year in Women's Super League 2, rather than a short-term solution.

Middleton-Patel has been on United’s books as one of the most highly regarded young keepers in the game and made her senior debut for the Red Devils against Newcastle United in December 2024. That breakthrough outing underlined the club’s belief in her, and she went on to add two more appearances last season under head coach Marc Skinner.

One of those came on a major stage: United’s Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain at Old Trafford, where she featured in a landmark European night for the club. It was the sort of occasion that tests temperament as much as talent, and she passed it.

United stressed they will keep a close eye on her development during her time away. In a club statement, they said: “We will be tracking Saf's progress closely and wish her the very best of luck.”
