From Bayern Struggles to Premier League Standout: Where is Ryan Gravenberch in 2026?
Ryan Gravenberch began his professional journey at Ajax, making history as their youngest debutant at just 16 years and 130 days old. His early promise caught the eye of European giants, leading to a move to Bayern Munich in 2022. Despite high hopes, his time in Germany was challenging, with limited starts over one season and only 33 appearances before moving on.
Stepping Up at Liverpool
Joining Liverpool brought fresh expectations. While Jurgen Klopp struggled to unlock his full potential, new coach Arne Slot helped Gravenberch shine during the 2024-25 season when Liverpool clinched the Premier League title. He missed only one league game, proving an energetic and reliable presence in midfield.
The following season saw a drop in team performance, finishing fifth without trophies. Questions arose about how best to use Gravenberch’s talents, especially whether he should play deeper to shield the defense in front of Virgil van Dijk.
Gravenberch's Current Status According to Dietmar Hamann
“I think he's somewhere between his lows at Munich and his peak during the title-winning season,” said former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann, speaking to GOAL alongside Betinia NJ. “He was brilliant when he came to Liverpool but last year was tough due to team issues like the Mohamed Salah saga and some new signings struggling to fit in.”
Hamann highlighted challenges in the forward line affecting Gravenberch’s impact. Players like Cody Gakpo underperformed, Salah found scoring difficult from open play, and others like Florian Wirtz had inconsistent form. This meant that even accurate passes from Gravenberch often went unconverted, making it hard for fans to appreciate his contributions fully.
“His role involves quickly feeding the ball to attackers so they can turn and create chances,” Hamann explained. “If they lose the ball or fail to act, people question what Gravenberch did. But when things click, it often starts with him.”
Though there were moments of subpar performances, Hamann believes Gravenberch remains a strong, intelligent player with defensive awareness. Liverpool will need him if they aim to return to former heights amid a tough upcoming season.
Looking Ahead: The 2026-27 Campaign
Gravenberch represented the Netherlands at the recent World Cup in North America. In the new Premier League season, he started Liverpool’s opener at Newcastle and appeared as a substitute in a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest. With new manager Andoni Iraola still assessing the squad, the Dutch midfielder is expected to play a key role as Liverpool face newly promoted Ipswich Town next.
Consistency in the lineup will be crucial for Liverpool to maximize the potential of their expensive squad. Gravenberch’s blend of power and vision could be vital in stabilizing the midfield and driving the team forward.
